John Thune has been a U.S. Senator from South Dakota since 2004. He was previously in the U.S. House of Representatives, but became a Senator after serving one term. He’s currently serving his third term in the Senate and is the Majority Whip for the 116th Congress, replacing John Cornyn after his limited term expired.
Like his Republican colleagues in the Senate, he stands by the same viewpoints. He was part of a group of 13 Senators who drafted the bill to repeal and replace the ACA, despite push-back from Democratic Senators and even American citizens.
Thune is also a strong supporter of the second amendment and gained national attention after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting over comments he made:
“A lot of us want to do everything we can to prevent tragedies like that from happening again. You know, it’s an open society. And when somebody does what he wants to do, it’s going to be hard to prevent anything. But I think people are going to have to take steps in their own lives to take precautions. To protect themselves. And in situations like that, you know, try to stay safe. As somebody said, get small.”

According to John, “My wife does come out periodically and spend some time out here with me while we’re in session.
