New York Times Bestseller
“...I love him, and I respect him, and I need him. We all do.”
―from the foreword by Jamie Lee Curtis
If you would have told a young John Stamos flipping burgers at his dad’s fast-food joint that one day he’d be a household name and that, at the height of his success, he’d be living alone, divorced, with no kids, high on a cocktail of forgetting, he might’ve asked, “You want fries with that?”
John burst onto the scene in General Hospital, propelling him into the teen idol stratosphere, a place that’s often a point of no return. But Stamos beat the odds and over the past four decades has proved himself to be one of his generation’s most successful and beloved actors. Whether showing off his comedic chops on Full House or his dramatic skills on ER, pushing the boundaries on Broadway or living out his youthful dreams as an honorary Beach Boy, John has surprised everyone, most of all himself.
A universal story about friendship, love, loss, and the courage to embrace love once more, John Stamos’s memoir is filled with some of the most memorable names in Hollywood, both old and new. Funny, deeply poignant, and brutally honest, If You Would Have Told Me is a portrait of a boy who went from believing in Disney magic to a man who learns that we have to create our own magical moments in life.

Review
An Instant New York Times Bestseller
Named a USA Today "Best Memoir to Read in 2023"
“An earnest debut memoir from the General Hospital, Full House, and ER star...Although Stamos is a legitimate celebrity himself, his memoir is a lesson in humility and gratitude for the people he’s shared scenes and stages with throughout his life...A portrait of a charming and charmed actor who has received plenty of love―and who has plenty of love to give...A heartfelt, sincere memoir filled with useful wisdom.”
―Kirkus
“In this charming debut, Full House star Stamos reflects on fame and family...Readers will be enchanted.”
―Publishers Weekly

But he's a normal guy with a great, normal, upbringing that falls in to acting with a great soap opera career that starts the ball rolling and is a great part of the book. And then The Full House with a great group of actors working in tandem which he does a great job describing. You read many books that talks of the egos but this book focuses more on the positives of his relationships and I think that is the secret to this book and John. He's a likeable guy who makes the best of his life. But there is an entire other part that I wasn't aware of: a Broadway career and decently successful at it working along side James Earl Jones among others. Another great relationship and man he respects.
A chapter on Don Rickles? Why not since he knew and spent time with him. Of course, the hook will be finding Tony Danza in bed with his girlfriend. But of more interest was his marriage/relationship with model Rebecca Romin Stamos. Lovely woman which eventually ends in divorce and John owns up to his faults here and how he let this slip away. (Hey John, I ran in to Rebecca and her new husband on their honeymoon trip in Riviera Maya Mexico. They seemed very happy). But can this honest, heartfelt guy eventually find true love? Of course, that's where the book ends! Read it. it's fun. and I didn't even mention The Beach Boys. Lucky guy.
While the beginning of the book about his childhood and early acting career was captivating, I had to push through the second half. There’s a lot on his working with other actors including in theatre with “Luke, I am your father” James Earl Jones and an entire chapter on Don Rickles. If you’re under 55 you likely don’t know who Rickles is and you’re probably better off. I wanted to know less about other actors and much more about Stamos the person and who he is on a deeper level.
I think he most definitely embellished some events and told “his” side of the story on a few occasions.
But he reminds us-don’t sleep on The Beach Boys, Disneyland, Broadway, good vibrations, hummingbirds, and of course, your life and the people in it. To remember with joy! It was a great read, and now I’m ready for ALL the memoirs.
