Breakthrough: The Miraculous True Story of a Mother's Faith and Her Child's Resurrection Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 1,684 ratings

The Impossible reveals prayer's immediate and powerful impact through the true account of a family whose son died and was miraculously resurrected.

Through the years and the struggles, when life seemed more about hurt and loss than hope and mercy, God was positioning the Smiths for something extraordinary-the death and resurrection of their son.

When Joyce Smith's fourteen-year-old son John fell through an icy Missouri lake one winter morning, she and her family had seemingly lost everything. At the hospital, John lay lifeless for more than sixty minutes. But Joyce was not ready to give up on her son. She mustered all her faith and strength into one force and cried out to God in a loud voice to save him.

Miraculously, her son's heart immediately started beating again.

In the coming days, John would defy every expert, every case history, and every scientific prediction. Sixteen days after falling through the ice and being clinically dead for an hour, he walked out of the hospital under his own power, completely healed.

The Impossible is about a profound truth: prayer really does work. God uses it to remind us that He is always with us, and when we combine it with unshakable faith, nothing is impossible.

JOYCE SMITH was born in Wichita, Kansas, but because of her father's work for a tool and die company, she grew up in Ohio and lived in eight different states as well as Canada and Germany. She worked for 25 years in accounting, but feels her biggest accomplishment has been as a wife and mother--one of the toughest jobs, with the lowest pay but the most rewards of any job on the face of the earth. She and her husband Brian live in St. Charles, Missouri. They have four wonderful sons and five beloved grandchildren. Joyce keeps busy with school and basketball, enjoys cross stitch, crochet, and decorating, and loves speaking to audiences about what God has done for her family...and continues to do.

Amazing read. I watched the movie a few years ago. The book was even better. Helps you understand God’s awesomeness and the power of prayer.

The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother's Faith and Her Child's Resurrection, also known as Breakthrough, is one of the most compelling books for believing that God still works miracles. Author Joyce Smith tells the story of her son's death and resurrection after he had fallen through the ice and lay at the bottom of a lake for 22 minutes. Miracle after miracle happened from the time John's body was found until he walked out of the hospital on his own two feet.

This book not only tells John's story of all the medical issues his body overcame, but it is a lesson in prayer, belief, and fighting spiritual warfare by speaking scripture.

Ginger Kolbaba did a beautiful job writing Joyce's story. If you doubt that miracles still happen today, you must read this story.

I have wanted to get this book for over a year after watching the movie that I very much enjoyed. I wanted to see how closely the movie followed the actual events. The movie certainly followed the basic storyline quite closely, although the movie did add an antagonist (pastor) who was not an antagonist in the real account and did leave out some of the intense spiritual warfare that was going on.
The book was much more faith-building than the movie because it clearly showed the battle to remain in faith for the miracle and showed step-by-step how that battle was won.
I’m very glad that I was able to read this book.

I sat down and read this book as soon as it came in the mail! Excellent.

Learning God's word, learning what Jesus Christ did for us, learning that God's will is for His will to be done on earth just like it is in heaven, delivered me from depression, the deep dark pit of depression. I had to learn how to speak God's word and stop agreeing with the devil and repeating his words of death and fear. Love you bunches. Seek Him. Ask God to help you to learn how to think like He thinks. Read the Holy Bible. Pray and ask God to explain what you are reading, what it meant then, what it means now, and what you are supposed to do with it, in Jesus' name. Amen.

"by Whose stripes you were healed"! 1Peter2:24b
"you were healed" by Jesus' stripes, those stripes that He took on His body when they brutally beat Him on the whipping post. Jesus Christ redeemed us from the power of sin, the kingdom of satan, that Adam, our great grandfather, sold us into. There was NO man on earth free to redeem us from Satan's prison because every man born had Adam for a father. So God Almighty, our Father, sent His SON, Jesus Christ, to redeem us from Satan's power of darkness. That is WHY Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came. God was His Father, not Adam. Jesus Christ was without sin, He was not a prisoner of Satan. THEREFORE, He could REDEEM us from Satan's power of darkness. Sickness is apart of Satan's power of darkness.

The Lord Jesus Christ redeemed us, but we have to believe it without doubting. We have to hit the devil with the Word of God, we have to tell the devil that the Lord Jesus Christ redeemed us. God by sending Jesus Christ to take our place, to bear our sins, He delivered us from the power of darkness. God then transferred us into the kingdom of the risen Lord Jesus Christ who died to deliver us. We must testify to what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us. "Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you." James4:7.

We submit to God by speaking what God's Word says Jesus Christ did for us. Christ has redeemed us from all the curse of the law. Galatians3:13.
Jesus said, "Behold, I give unto you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Luke10:19 . NKJV.

Love Joyce's testimony!!!! No doubt!

I would give the rating higher if I could. What an awesome testimony of just how great our God is. I had seen the movie with some friends one of which had previously read the book. She said you must read the book there's so much more that's not in the movie. Tho the movie was so touching and very moving when I read this it felt as tho I was hearing the story for the first time. It just kept me not wanting to not put the book down. Tho I knew the final outcome with so much happening that wasn't in the movie it kept my emotions going through the entire book. This families story is a testament of just how GREAT our GOD is. NOTHING is too big for him to handle. I cannot highly recommend this book enough for others to read.

We read this book in our book club. The story is quite amazing. I thought the author/mother was honest in her telling of the events, including her flaws. Why does God save some and not others is the crux of the matter. I think He moved her to pray and enabled her to pray like she did. I don’t think it was because she was special, but because she was willing. Faith can move mountains.

This book was absolutely amazing!! I am a firm believer in miraculous healing by God. I have seen it with my own eyes. This book told the true story of John Smith by his mother, Joyce Smith. John was a 14 year old that fell through the ice and had no pulse for more than 60 minutes. The doctor was getting ready to pronounce John dead when Joyce got to the hospital. She prayed to God to allow the Holy Spirit to come into her son and restart his heart. As she is praying, John's heart starts beating again. The doctors did not give John's family much hope for him to survive and if he did, he would have brain damage. John's family, church, school, and town all prayed for John over those days. Joyce and their pastor, Jason, prayed over John's body for a good portion of those days. Sixteen days after the accident, John walked out of the hospital on his own and completely healed.

This book is an eye awakening experience to the power of prayer. Doctor's and scientist can try to explain away what happened, but only God could miraculously restart a heartbeat of someone who has been dead for over an hour and heal him completely. I highly recommend this book to everyone!!

A most powerful book of a mother's faith in the only God that is alive and hears our prayers. It was written to encourage those who find themselves in impossible circumstances, but if we sincerely seek Gods face and trust Him, then He can intervene and turn the impossible into possible!!!
