Aston Villa handed Champions League boost courtesy of one-of-a-kind John McGinn

John McGinn is set to return to the Aston Villa squad following his three-match suspension and provide a boost towards Champions League qualification.

The Villa captain was sent off in the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur (10 March) after kicking out at Destiny Udogie on 65 minutes.

This has seen the Scottish international miss out on matches against West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester City.

The Villans were only able to secure one win without their skipper and his return is sure to be a welcome return for Unai Emery.

What impact can John McGinn have on his Aston Villa return?

There aren’t many players like McGinn in world football never mind in the Villa squad, he has been a huge miss in recent weeks.

His sending-off against Spurs came after a period of frustration where he appeared to be the only player in claret and blue putting effort in to press.

Chants of ‘Super John McGinn’ were halted by the shock award of a red card and his absence has been noticed, there is no doubt.

This campaign he has registered six goals and three assists [FotMob] while featuring in any position imaginable across the midfield.

He has a rate of 1.75 successful take-ons, 3.48 shot-creating actions and 0.17 non-penalty goals per 90. This ranks him within the top 20% and higher when compared to midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues, according to Fbref.

He is the perfect addition to the midfield alongside more technical players like Douglas Luiz and Youri Tielemans who all complement each other greatly.

To have McGinn back in against Brentford will get Villa fans on their feet and provide a boost to the whole squad moving further into the run-in.
