Biography

drowned in a misadventure on the Saint John River.

"Supposed to be drowned - It appears that Andrew MILLER has been for some months engaged grappling the river for old junk and was about to proceed on a similar journey on Friday week. A brother-in-law named STEVENS, brother of Benjamin STEVENS, resides on Straight Shore Road, Portland (St. John) was to accompany Miller on the trip up in a small sail boat. All being ready they left Indiantown about 9 o'clock Friday night, taking grappling hooks with them. They stopped on their journey at Westfield (Kings Co.) where they procured liquor, remaining there but a very brief time and then proceeded on. Miller, it is stated, was the worst of liquor and requested Stevens to take charge of the boat. Stevens consented and took a seat aft, where he was last seen by Miller. The latter at this time was lying at the bottom of the boat and shortly afterwards fell asleep. How much further Stevens sailed is unknown for when Miller awoke from his slumber near Brandy Point, he was somewhat amazed to find that his late companion was not in the boat. He returned home the same night and communicated the sudden disappearance to the family of the deceased. Stevens was a man of about 60 years and has left a wife and small family. Benjamin Stevens, the brother and a son of the missing man went up in a woodboat yesterday afternoon with hooks and ropes to grapple for the body. " - Daily Telegraph, July 19,1879
