“A rollicking, foil-mouthed” [memoir]....Boehner has delivered a classic Washington “tell-all,” albeit one with his typical jocular style.” -
-The Washington Post

Former Speaker of the House John Boehner shares colorful tales from the halls of power, the smoke-filled rooms around the halls of power, and his fabled tour bus.

John Boehner is the last of a breed. At a time when the arbiters of American culture were obsessing over organic kale, cold-pressed juice, and SoulCycle, the man who stood second in line to the presidency was unapologetically smoking Camels, quaffing a glass of red, and hitting the golf course whenever he could.

There could hardly have been a more diametrically opposed figure to represent the opposition party in President Barack Obama's Washington. But when Boehner announced his resignation, President Obama called to tell the outgoing Speaker that he'd miss him. "Mr. President," Boehner replied, "yes you will." He thought of himself as a "regular guy with a big job," and he enjoyed it.

In addition to his own stories of life in the swamp city and of his comeback after getting knocked off the leadership ladder, Boehner offers his impressions of leaders he's met and what made them successes or failures, from Ford and Reagan to Obama, Trump, and Biden. He shares his views on how the Republican Party has become unrecognizable today; the advice--some harsh, some fatherly--he dished out to members of his own party, the opposition, the media, and others; and his often acid-tongued comments about his former colleagues. And of course he talks about golfing with five presidents.

Through Speaker Boehner's honest and self-aware reflections, you'll be reminded of a time when the adults were firmly in charge.

Review

“Jaw-dropping...beyond interesting.” -- Gayle King

“Former Speaker of the House John Boehner’s trademark brutal honesty is alive and well in his new memoir
On the House, a pull-no-punches look at the people who control the corridors of power and a cautionary tale about who he says hijacked the GOP...He does not hold back.” -- Whoopi Goldberg

“Preliminary evidence suggests this is the greatest book ever written.” --
Seth Masket, professor of political science, University of Denver

“If the recipe to write a good political memoir is a few glasses of Merlot and then just turning on the tape recorder...we should just definitely try that more often.” --
David Freedlander, New York Magazine

“Boehner finally calls it as he sees it.” --
Nancy Sinatra

“Some juicy parts…candid…There’s so much great stuff in this book.” --
Stephen Colbert

“No shortage of insults...Written in his folksy manner,
On the House is certainly more entertaining than the standard “halls of power” narratives” -- The New York Times

“The former Republican House speaker is good company throughout
On the House... You can practically hear him uncorking another bottle of merlot as he literally curses the colleagues who made his job unbearable.” -- Los Angeles Times

“It is unlike the classic Washington memoir, those soft-focus accounts extolling what-I-achieved in office.” --
USA TODAY

“He writes like a guy chatting at a bar, and talks of his experience, including his experience with his fellow Republicans, using so much vulgarity that it would be hard for him to do a reading here on the radio.” --
Steve Inskeep, NPR

"The former speaker of the House has all the best dirt; the tea he spills is refreshing in its honesty." --
Hayes Brown, MSNBC

"....disarmingly funny...He has a taste for one-liners that blend the folksy with the sweary ... It is hard not to enjoy a memoir like this." --
The Financial Times

“A very enjoyable read” --
Jake Tapper, CNN

“A memoir that often reads like he's simply here to share some of his favorite tales over a couple of drinks….It's refreshing to read a memoir with a politician's honest accountings of repeated failures rather than self-inflated successes.” --
NPR

On The House might be the most delightful political memoir I've ever read. Speaker Boehner is
so direct and emotionally transparent. Even when you don't agree with him, he just builds up a
rant, like Rowdy Roddy Piper, and you just feel his contempt or affection or whatever. He is the
son of a bartender, as Obama pointed out when he took over the Speaker's chair in 2011, and
shows the rough lifestyle of smoking, red wine, and golf. This is in contrast with his successor
Paul Ryan, who is famously healthy. But Boehner also has a poignant memory of his high school
football coach Gerry, at a Catholic school who later went to Notre Dame. My track coach and
English teacher Mr. P, who had a similar mentoring role, died yesterday. Most political books
have a lot of "expletives deleted," but unlike most of them, Boehner is creative, and knows how
to time his metaphors effectively.

This is a great introduction to politics and how it works. Boehner began with the House bank
scandal in the late 80s and early 90s. So early on, he was shaking up the system and known
as a reformer of the system. But in these days of populism right and left, he makes a defense
of the establishment. As Teddy Roosevelt said, it's a lot easier to be a critic than to be actually
getting things done out in the arena. Boehner's not saying that the system is all good, just that
it is what it is, and you have to work with it if you want to get things done and make a positive
impact in people's lives. For instance, bureaucrats and lobbyists cause all kinds of problems,
but the Constitution does state that lobbying is a right.

I knew that this book would be great, because Boehner always has amusing takes on his fellow
politicians, such as Pelosi, McConnell and Reid. He fully concedes that he is, well, another word for
a donkey. The point isn't that his takes are right or wrong, just that he's so good at them. He discusses every President since Jerry Ford, whom he finds underrated. It was Reagan who got him into politics,
and he was viewed as "too old, too Hollywood, too right-wing" and the media expected Bush. But
Reagan understood that if you can get 80%, you make a compromise and get things done, rather
than being a purist and doing nothing. Clinton of course is the subject of amusing anecdotes, such
as when he was playing golf and gave an autograph to Boehner's wife. But his political skills
were undeniable. George W. picked on Boehner for not being able to keep his conference in line,
so sometimes he really made him mad, but he was a friend. Of course Cheney and Rice were critical
to the Bush administration. Obama was a great communicator and a good person, but Boehner shows
the conventional wisdom that he was unable to relate effectively to legislators. Regarding Trump, Boehner is highly critical of his claiming the 2020 election was stolen. When he met him, "I thought many things, but I never said, there goes the future President of the United States".

The House leaders include Bob Michel (old establishment), Newt Gingrich ("you may have heard
of him" "absent minded professor with bad ties"), Dick Armey ("pal"), Tom DeLay (not a fan in
general), Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and Mike Pence. In 2010 Boehner had the highlight of his career becoming speaker, but his conference had become "crazy town" with Michele Bachmann, Steve King, Louis Goehmert, and later on the Freedom Caucus with Jim Jordan, Mark Meadows and Mick Mulvaney.
Of course he is equally critical of AOC and the Squad. On the Democratic side were Tip O'Neill,
Tom Foley, Dick Gephardt, Nancy Pelosi, John Dingell, Henry Waxman and George Miller.

Senators include Jesse Helms, Joe Biden, Ted Kennedy (with an extensive review of No Child Left
Behind), Bernie Sanders (he actually believes all the crazy stuff he says, he's nuts but not cynical),
John McCain (and Sarah Palin), Chuck Schumer, Lindsay Graham and Ted Cruz (whom he famously
compared to Lucifer). In discussing the media, Boehner has fine stories about Tim Russert and
Lesley Stahl. I'm always interested in someone's faith. He doesn't talk about it much, but when
he does it is deep and heartfelt. He went to Catholic high school, and when he met Pope Francis
in September 2015, he decided not to wait and to announce his resignation the next day.

John Boehner liked his job as Speaker of the House, but he liked it much better when he retired. The far right had taken over, and .li..fe on Capitol Hill became tougher. He spent time working his way up-to Speaker and the perks were good, but he realized it was time to go. Boehner gives us a taste of his life in the House, the people he met and times he had, and his book is quite reflective and humorous.

Boehner starts his book with his first encounter with Trump, they played golf as a foursome. He learned what a fierce competitor Trump-was, and he plays a good golf game. This is the entry to the book, alot of compliments, but more insights into today’s world. He thinks Nancy Pelosi may be the most powerful Speaker in his lifetime. Boehner is best known for his Boehnerisms, ten sayings that Boehner lives by, and they pop up throughout the book, one give away, ’There is a fine line between stupidity and courage’. You will find this particularly true in DC. We have all read the lines he has given out on his presstour about the politicians whose name is in the news of the day. Most often you will get Boehner’s opinion straight from him. But we hear more as the book proceeds, and like Nancy Pelosi there are surprises along the way.

Boehner believes in our country. He is a true Patriot. He recognizes we are off the track, and he has his own suggestions. However, he also believes that the young people of today can get us back on track, we need to support and help them focus. He is proud of who he is. 25 years ago he walked into the House, and 25 years later he walked out the same man. His worst day was when the Capitol was overtaken on January 6, 2021. This was a true insurrection in his mind , but we can overcome. He believes in Hope, and that the US can become strong again. He has no qualms in placing blame, and does so. He talks about his retirement, and how he came to drink red wine. This is a fun, sometimes solemn book, full of DC lore, but most of all full of Boehner. He writes like he is, his true self.

John Boehner's memoir is a marvelously entertaining look at the institution of the House of Representatives and how it really works. It also contains insights on the principles of leadership. Although I disagree with many of Boehner's political ideas and actions, it is still a worthwhile book to read. Particularly, entertaining are his cutting comments about the crazy wing of the Republican party and Fox News.
