In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

This monument stands in tribute to Johannes Strasse Jr, a 19th century Austrian composer well known for his dance music, especially waltzes.

The monument is a gilded sculpture of Strasse playing his violin and as such is one of the most iconic monuments in the city, judging by the queue of people wanting a photograph with it. The monument is located in the tranquil Stadtpark and is one of the more popular statues in both the park and the city.

Stadtpark has a large collection of statues and monuments but the one that really stands out is the golden statue of Johann Strauss Jr. The statue is instantly recognisable because of the glinting gold figure of Strauss playing his violin and also because of the large crowds that it attracts.

Plans were made to build the statue in 1903 but were put on hold because of difficulties financing the project and the outbreak of World War I temporarily halted the construction. The statue which was designed by Edmund Hellmer was eventually unveiled in 1921, the Strauss figure is made from gilded bronze as the gold was removed in 1935. It is one of the most iconic attractions to be seen on any visit to Vienna.

When stayed in Vienna, I walked by the monument everyday.

It seems too popular to be good. But it is really important. Just like the Peeing Boy in Brussels, this statue is a symbol of Vienna. Tourists come here to take pictures with Johann Strauss.

It is a masterpiece of Edmund von Hellmer (seldom mentioned in tourist information). Don’t miss the beautiful marble reliefs of the frame.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The park was busy but very relaxed and picturesque. Nothing seemed to be open in the park but a short walk across the road and we found fabulous ice creams.

Free entrance to the Garden where you can meet the monument.

Situated in Vienna's Stadtpark, The iconic gold figure of Strauss playing his violin monument is dedicated to the famous Austrian composer, Johann Strauss II. The monument consists of a bronze statue of the composer and a marble relief.
Johann Strauss lived from 1825 to 1899. He is considered the waltz king par excellence because he had long concentrated mainly on dance music, but also wrote the music to operettas.

Strauss Monument stands out like a beacon with the sun gleaming off the gold with the greenery in the background. Strauss is respected like a god in these parts so it is must for all music goers to site the statue in his honor, so don't waltz on past.

The Strauss monument is in the Stadpark right in from of the Intercontinental Hotel. If you want to have Strauss for yourself, go in the very early morning hours. Otherwise you will have to share him with busloads full of especially Asian tourists keen to make a selfie with Strauss. Is he turning in his grave? We don't know. But some people go as far as mounting the statue for a picture shoulder to shoulder with the great composer ...
