Jim Plunkett set records all three years he quarterbacked Stanford. As a sophomore, 1968, he passed for 2,156 yards, a record in what was then the Pac-8 Conference. He broke the record in 1969 and 1970. For his career he had 7,887 yards in total offense, a national record that lasted 13 years. In 1970, he won 28 awards, including the Heisman and Maxwell and consensus All-America rating. Plunkett was born December 5, 1947 in Santa Clara, California and was a high school star there. His parents were blind, and he chose nearby Stanford so he could be near them. Stanford went 22-8-2 in his three years, and he said his best game was a 27-17 victory over Ohio State in the Rose Bowl January 1, 1971. Then came 13 years as a pro with the Patriots, 49ers and Raiders. In pro football as in college, Plunkett was a winner all the way.
