Scott had a four-year hiatus from music and released her fourth album called The Light of the Sun in 2011. Last 2014, she starred in the film Get On Up as James Brown's second wife. She also played a lead role in the HBO/BBC series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. It is based on the novels of Alexander McCall Smith with the same name. She released her fifth album, Woman in 2015.

Scott is a soprano who can infuse hip-hop, spoken word, R&B, opera, and jazz. She can create a distinct style that lots of people refer to as the neo-soul. One reviewer from Pop Matter referred to the vocal ability of Scott as someone who can draw on her upper register. Her talent is similar to the artistry of the late songbirds Deniece Williams and Minnie Ripperton. It is rare to be able to hit notes in the sixth octave like in her song 'Gimme.' Here she hits the D6 with a full vibrato and hits the C7 in the background of 'Spring Summer Feeling.'
