Jennette McCurdy was born on June 26, 1992, in Los Angeles, California, United States. She is the youngest of four children, as well as the only daughter. She was raised alongside her elder brothers, Dustin, Marcus, and Scott, in Garden Grove, California, to their parents Mark and Debra McCurdy. Jennette describes her family as a "dysfunctional Mormon" one.

When Mccurdy was 3 years old, her mother Debra was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent multiple treatment procedures including chemotherapy, surgery, and a bone marrow transplant. Debra was diagnosed with cancer again in 2010, and died on September 20, 2013.[1] McCurdy opended up about her relationship with her mother, stating how Debra was emotionally, physically, and also sexually abusive against her, to the point where she forced Jennette into acting when she was 6 years old for financial support since they were a poor family. She also revealed that her mother was obsessed with transforming her into a famous star.

In 2019, McCurdy revealed that the abuse she received from her mother had also caused her to suffer eating disorders, which were also complicated by her career as a child actress in Nickelodeon. She also began heavily drinking alcohol shortly before her mother's death. She briefly dated American basketball player Andre Drummond in 2013.[2]

Career[]

Nickelodeon[]

McCurdy began her acting career when she was 6 years old. Her first major appearance on Nickelodeon was during 2005, as Trisha Kirby in the television series Zoey 101. In 2007, Jennette starred in iCarly as Sam Puckett, one of the main characters in the show, and later in its spin-off series Sam & Cat with Ariana Grande. She declined reprising her role as Sam in the 2021 revival of iCarly due to past trauma from the original show's creator Dan Schneider.

Music career[]

In June 2008, McCurdy announced through her website that she was working on her debut album Jennette McCurdy, which contained songs "So Close" (2009), "Homeless Heart" (2009), her extended-play "Not That Far Way" (2010), and "Generation Love" (2011).

Other works[]

On December 17, 2016, McCurdy created her YouTube channel, and uploaded a short film called Kenny on January 10, 2019. On July 22, 2020, Jennette uploaded a video titled "I'm starting a...", in which she announced she was starting a podcast called "Empty Inside", in which she has interviewed a new guest each episode to talk about personal and/or sensitive topics such as mental health, eating disorders, depression, and other similar subjects.

McCurdy has also published a memoir called "I'm Glad My Mom Died" on August 9, 2022, which goes into detail about her experience with her mother's abusive and narcissistic nature with "refreshing candor and dark humor".[3] This is her first book, and it has received positive reviews.
