Whenever Jeff Beck releases an album, it s always a musical event. As a continuation of multifaceted career defining albums, preceded by Blow By Blow (Friday Music) and Wired (Friday Music), the iconic guitarist unleashed one of the most popular albums in his ever enduring catalog in 1989 with Jeff Beck s Guitar Shop.
This Grammy Award winning masterwork pairs the guitar hero with his powerful duo of world class musicians, Terry Bozio (drums) and Tony Hymas (keyboards). The brilliant guitar shredder and his band of amazing master musicians truly throw down some of his classiest and hardest driving repertoire for this Jeff Beck, Terry Bozio, Tony Hymas and Leif Mases production.
The album begins with the funk rocker Guitar Shop. The tune finds Jeff Beck and Co. dueling on some very solid power riffs making this a great opening track for the listener. Be sure to check out Terry Bozio s clever spoken vocals on this crowd pleaser.
The soulful vibe of Where Were You has the tremendous voicing of Jeff s guitar with Tony Hymas fine keyboard elements and Terry Bozio s wonderful drum work throughout. Beck s unbelievable guitar prowess is second to none, as this track is truly a definitive moment from this brilliant masterwork.
Hard rock fusion continues with more classics like Stand On It, Savoy and Sling Shot. These and his jazz rock leaning hits like Two Rivers and Behind The Veil truly reward his fans with one of the finest albums in his multiplatinum and award winning career!
It is with much honor to announce the limited edition 180 Gram Audiophile release of Jeff Beck s classic Jeff Beck s Guitar Shop. As a continuation of our highly regarded Jeff Beck Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series, this fine recording is mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, Yes) at Friday Music Studios and pressed at R.T.I.

Have to say concerning Jeff Beck that his musical career started out well and has only gotten better since his unexpected mid- career setback. Personally l am cheered by his recovery and perseverance to go on and make even better ( and might l say, " exceptional " ) recordings . It has been inspiring to see him succeed despite what could have been a lost guitar playing hero if he had been a lesser man. I have been in awe of his talent since the " Truth " lp came out early on, and this disc here shows Mr. Beck's exceptional talent. For me this CD with Terry Bozzio ( check out Bozzio Levin Stevens' " Situation Dangerous " for a nice surprise ) and Tony Hymas marks a highly point in Jeff Beck's long career that he has been topping ever since. It's so very nice to see a uncompromising talent that is truly courageous and such an inspiration. Try this recording out on your ears and l highly doubt that you will in the least be disappointed. Go ,Jeff, too !!!
I'm always looking for opportunities to add to my Jeff Beck music collection. "Guitar Shop" was one of the few works I hadn't yet acquired. When I located the Blu-Spec version, I decided to give it a try. I had never seen this particular format before. Note that it is NOT "Bluray" and it WILL play on standard CD players. It's not cheap, but given the success I've had with some discs I've accumulated in other formats or re-issues, including MoFi gold CDs made from original masters, Sony 20-bit SBM discs, SACDs, DVD-As, etc, I thought I'd take a chance.
I can't compare the sound quality of this disc and format to the standard issue, because I don't own the standard disc and haven't heard it. Having said that, I think this investment was worth it. I am fortunate enough to have assembled a very nice playback system over the years, and I use it regularly. So quality of playback is important to me.
The sound on this Blu-Spec disc is clean and transparent. Dynamics with drum whacks and guitar plucks and transients are very very good...and goodness knows there are a lot of those! However, the disc is mastered somewhat on the "loud" side, so you may find you will be using a lower volume setting than usual.
There is an uncommonly good decay and air as notes fade in intensity, so much so that there is a great sense of depth, providing an almost "in the music hall" feeling of ambience that you don't often get with studio "rock" recordings. Jeff's guitar is all over the room, with tactical dubs that often have you guessing where he's going to attack from next. Images are solid, with great center fill when appropriate. The image is often wider than the separation of the speakers and front to back depth is good.
Good examples of this sense of air and ambience are "Behind The Veil" and "Where Were You," although the more raucous "Stand on It" displays the same sense of space as well.
Given the transparency, Jeff's guitar work is a real treat here. You really get a great presentation of his wide variety of tonal colors, textures, and plucking, picking and strumming methods. The first cut "Guitar Shop," in fact, is a guitar sounds metaphor for hot rodding a car, demonstrating the results of "upgrades" to a standard issue guitar as though the player was hot rodding the guitar, through build and technique. Intriguing, and the transparency of this disc results in all the various techniques of Jeff's playing being on clear display. Impressive.
In fact, of course, much of the disc is a metaphor combining references to Jeff's love of hot rod guitar playing and hot rod automobilia.
Generally the recording is quite smooth, particularly considering the fantastic clarity. The only real anamoly I noted upon first listen was occasionally somewhat gritty-sounding cymbal work, particularly the hi-hat and/or crash cymbal I think, with a bit less sheen and smoothness than you would expect given the general sound of the disc. My particular sound system can be quite revealing of problems of this nature, but given the overall smoothness of the sound of this disc, again especially given it's transparency, I found it a little out of character. This is really nit-picking.
All in all a great addition to the JB collection, and I'm glad I bought it in this format. So much so, in fact, I'll look for more of these Sony Music Japan International, Blu-Spec pressings.
I would rate this Blu-Spec effort 5 stars, if not for the high price.
Cheers.
