As someone who's gone from living in a hotel to starring in Aquaman, Jason Momoa is living proof that anything can happen—including marrying a major Generation X goddess-like Lisa Bonet. The 42-year-old actor may have conquered Hollywood with his big pecs, big smiles and boundless enthusiasm—as well as his acclaimed performances in projects like The Red Road, See, SweetGirl and his newest movie, Dune—but for many years, it was his long-term romance with his wife that made him proudest of all.

“My wife is amazing,” Momoa gushed to PEOPLE in 2018 about the 53-year-old former Cosby Show star. “She makes me laugh and is just really quirky... We are a perfect fit." And yes, he knew just how lucky he was. "If someone says something isn't possible," Momoa said in 2019, "I'm like, ‘Listen here, I married Lisa Bonet. Anything is f***ing possible."

Proving, indeed, that anything is possible, on Jan. 12, 2022, the couple shocked the world when they announced on Instagram that they were taking steps to end their four-year marriage.

"We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding—and our family is of no exception," both Momoa and Bonet posted on their individual Instagram accounts. "And so we share our family news—that we are parting ways in marriage. We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy, but so that as we go about our lives, we may do so with dignity and honesty."

They added, "The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become… Teaching our children what’s possible—Living the Prayer. May Love Prevail."

Since then, however, it's been reported that they may be walking back that decision and giving their marriage another shot. Keep reading to find out all about Jason Momoa's marriage to wife Lisa Bonet.

Who is Jason Momoa married to?

Momoa and Bonet tied the knot in October 2017 after happily dating (and mating; see below!) for over a decade. Their at-home wedding was a super-secret affair—so secret, in fact, that most fans had assumed they'd gotten married 10 years prior in November 2007.

“Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet had an official wedding a few weeks ago at their house in Topanga, California,” an insider told Us Weekly at the time. “Apparently they weren’t officially married until then! They said they ‘made it official.'” However, making it official still meant keeping it casual: After the pair reportedly purchased their marriage license from their local county clerk’s office a week before their nuptials, Us Weekly said the Hawaiian-born Momoa rocked "an unbuttoned white shirt and a lei" and "styled his long locks into a man bun" for the ceremony, which also included "some of the guests perform[ing] a traditional Māori haka for the bride." Fellow celebs in attendance included famed rock climber Chris Sharma, "several of Momoa’s former costars" and Hollywood couple Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbenderwho got married themselves in a hush-hush ceremony in Ibiza about a week later!

The following month, Momoa admitted at a JusticeLeague press junket that he wasn't thrilled when word of his nuptials got out. “I thought it would have stayed [private], but some a**hole leaked it and I will find you,” he said. However, he also emphasized that the wedding was just a formality.  “You know what, I've been married to my wife for 12 years,” he explained. “It’s just a gathering of our families and celebrating our love.”

Since then, Momoa and Bonet had seemingly made it clear that their marriage worked great despite their 12-year age difference.

"I think I'd be in a whole worse place if I didn't have a beautiful wife and children," Momoa once said, while Bonet said in 2008, "Having a mate has given me that feeling of safety... Jason is the love of my life. He's everything I hoped would come."

Are Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet splitting?

On Feb. 28, HollywoodLife reported that they are living together again and are working on repairing their marriage. "Jason moved back in with Lisa about two weeks ago and they are very much back together,” a source told the outlet. “They decided to work on things rather than throw in the towel because they have so much invested in each other... Everyone is really hoping that they can make this work this time around.”

How did Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet meet?

Like everyone else, Momoa first saw Bonet on The Cosby Show. “Ever since I was like 8 years old I saw her on the TV, I was like ‘Mommy, I want that one,’” he told James Corden in 2017 before adding (jokingly!), "I'm like, 'I’m gonna stalk you for the rest of my life and I’m gonna get you.' I am a full-fledged stalker. I didn’t tell her that until we had two babies, otherwise I’d be creepy and weird."

He added that he was living out of a hotel when they met at a jazz café in 2006-ish and bonded over Guinness and grits. Momoa felt “fireworks inside”, he later recalled.

What was Bonet thinking at the time? “I can’t say it was full-on from the moment we saw each other, but we have been together from the day we met,” she said in 2018. “In that moment, love came and it came big and he did not run as I think a lot of men do."

Since becoming a couple, the pair have worked together a few times. She had a recurring role in The Red Road and they appeared together in the film Road to Paloma, which he directed, wrote and starred in. "That was a mother****er," Momoa said of their love scene together in the film. "It was a very hard scene to shoot. She didn't think so, but it was.”

Who is Jason Momoa dating?

Before Bonet came along, Momoa was linked for seven years to Australian actress Simmone Jade Mackinnon, who he proposed to in 2004. They were reportedly planning a wedding in Hawaii when "everything abruptly changed," possibly because that's around the time Momoa and Bonet met.

Mackinnon said at the time about Momoa's new romance, "It's a shock and of course this news has been upsetting, but I have moved on and I am very happy and enjoying a great relationship with someone else."

Who did Jason Momoa play on Game of Thrones?

Momoa's big break came in 2011 when he got the role of Khal Drogo in Season 1 HBO’s wildly successful fantasy drama Game of Thrones. That's where he found a "work wife" through his onscreen marriage to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)—and unlike his real-life marriage, this one caused a lot of controversy: Clarke's character was forced to marry him and the coupling started with a rape on their wedding night. Still, the two characters eventually fell in love, with her calling him “my sun and stars” and he calling her “moon of my life,” and the marriage lasted as long as his character did.

Momoa and Clarke got along famously and are still fond of each other. In early August 2021, they met up at a birthday party for Games of Thrones co-creator David Benioff and snapped pics together. Clarke posted a pic of herself being lifted bridal-style by Momoa on Instagram, captioning it, “When your sun and stars rolls into town you check that he can still bench press a Khaleesi.” Momoa responded, “love u forever moon of my life.” Momoa posted a different picture of them as well, captioning it, "MOON OF MY LIFE. You are wonderful love u forever.”

Does Jason Momoa have kids?

"I'm very thankful for my family. They keep me in the sky but they also keep me grounded,” Momoa has said about his home life with Bonet and the two children they share: Lola Iolani, 14, and Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, 12.

Momoa said “it was the greatest day of my life” when Lola was born in 2007, as he posted on Instagram to celebrate her 11th birthday a few years back. “Lola oh Lola. You are my angel.”

Growing up without his own father around, "I didn't know what it takes to be a dad,” Momoa said in 2020. He’s learned along the way, explaining, “I don't want to just tell my son, 'Because I said so... I really want to connect, and I want [son Wolf] to be vulnerable and open."

Momoa is also fiercely protective of his children. "When I'm by myself, I'm really cool and nice to everyone, but then the whole paparazzi thing? If you see me with my kids, I change," Momoa explained to Esquire. "I just want them not to deal with that. I'm just Papa to them. We don't watch TV. We haven't even seen Star Wars yet."

Even without TV, their lives together are exciting. In 2020, Momoa shared a short video of Lola on a bike, throwing an ax. “LOLA’s MANANALU CHALLENGE quarantine training. I want to be my kids when I grow up,” he quipped.

Jason Momoa is also a proud stepfather to Zoë Kravitz, 32, Bonet’s daughter with rocker Lenny Kravitz.

Does Jason Momoa get along with Lisa Bonet’s ex?

Lisa Bonet was married to Kravitz, 57, from 1987 to 1993 (Momoa was only 9 years old when they wed!). The three of them are all on great terms today. Kravitz and Momoa's bromance in particular mystifies and delights fans, who can’t believe that Bonet married two hotties and that they are both so fond of each other.

In 2018, Momoa even put a ring on Kravitz’s finger, literally. He gifted Kravitz a bone skull ring and posted a pic of them together wearing their matching rings. Kravitz had admired the ring, which Momoa’s friend made, so he got him one.

"People can't believe how tight Jason and I are, or how tight I still am with Zoë's mom, how we all relate," Kravitz told Men’s Health in 2020. "We just do it because that's what you do. You let love rule, right?" Still, Kravitz has also admitted that the happy family situation requires effort. "I love [Bonet’s] husband [Momoa]—he's like a brother to me—and I love the kids. It's beautiful, but it takes work,” he said in another interview.
