Jason Momoa Talks 'Singing and Dancing' in Super Bowl Ad: ‘I'm Not Normally Hired for Comedy’ (Exclusive)

Jason Momoa recently added singing and dancing to his already-impressive set of onscreen skills.

Momoa, 44, stars alongside Zach Braff and Donald Faison in T-Mobile's 2024 Super Bowl commercial, and the trio sat down with PEOPLE on the set in Valencia, California, to talk about the Aquaman star's musical debut.

Momoa broke out of his comfort zone for the musical spot, set to the tune of Irene Cara's "What a Feeling" from the film Flashdance. "It's my first time singing, first time dancing," he says.

Momoa tells PEOPLE he was first pitched the idea for the commercial with a homemade "short film" that Faison, 49, and Braff, 48, produced on an iPhone from a pool in Miami with director Brian Klugman.

"It was well-crafted. I had never had a pitch like this, and I was cracking up watching it because I was like, did these guys put this together? It was beautiful," says Momoa.

Braff explains that he, Faison, and Klugman were in Miami for AdWeek at the time, and they thought, "There's no way they’re going to use us for Super Bowl a third year in a row" after starring in T-Mobile's game-day slot in back-to-back years. "But, we were like, well, we should try, so we were in the pool and just started brainstorming.”

Momoa says he loved the "hilarious" pitch, but his "first" thought was, "I can't sing — they're going to have to find someone to sing. I've never sung on anything before!"

And that wasn't the only first for Momoa, who says Braff and Faison "didn't tell me I was dancing until" he arrived on set that day.

The former Scrubs stars say that Momoa did "such a good job" stepping up for the challenge on set. "He joins the party perfectly because we come out here, and we just act like goofballs, and Jason's doing a great job being silly with us," says Braff.

Momoa says Braff and Faison were "so supportive" on set, and the comedy duo are thrilled to have the movie star beside them for the commercial, about T-Mobile Home Internet.

"It’s like coming into a family," Momoa says of working with Braff and Faison. "You get to see them on the shows, and you feel like you know them. And then when you meet them, you hope they’re not going to be a--holes, and they’re not! They're beautiful and they're so supportive."

Faison says that Momoa "was game right away" to do whatever they asked of him on set, including being doused with water. "Right away, we started joking around from the first rehearsal of us knocking on the door," Faison shares.

"He just jumped right into it," says Braff.

"I mean, that's the thing," Momoa begins. "I'm not normally hired for comedy, so I love being able to come in and do stuff like this."

And his Super Bowl commercial costars predict Momoa's performance in the spot might mean more comedic roles in the movie star's future.

"PEOPLE, you've got the exclusive right here," Braff jokes, "Jason Momoa will be doing more comedy in years to come."

Super Bowl LVIII kicks off on Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
