This is THE quintessential slasher movie . Halloween started it ( some could argue Texas Chainsaw Massacre did ) , and as much as I love Carpenter movies....Halloween was the model T ford and Friday the 13th was the Ferrari.
It's shot very well but still with a slightly rough almost documentary edge , the gore effects were outstanding if not over the top for the time ...and the music score tied it all together.
It's still frightening in my opinion. It hadent gone into the super natural stuff yet so it was a believable who done it murder mystery with gore. It's litteraly something that could happen and mind you - it was set in a time before cell phones and internet everywhere . So as the camp counselors die one by one , you feel the isolation of the remaining surviors .
No it's not gone with the wind and it doesn't have a deep complex plot with grade A actors but that's a good thing . It had one goal - scare you , get the adrenaline pumping . It was a thrill ride .
I know younger kids like to say " it wasn't that scary " . Kids today have to always be defensive of their current generation. It's odd . I guess they feel they have too big of shoes to fill so they have to be tough . Like I showed my nephew Ed Bassmaster but he couldn't acknowledge that a " boomer " ( actually gen x'r but they call us boomers too ) showed him something current and funny ...but latter the same day he was gorging on it . He spread the " phshhhh " thing around his whole high school ...
So , kids are reluctant to tell you the truth .
It's not the scariest movie ever . It's not the exorcist . But it is a thrill ride with the genesis of good gore .
One last thing I'll say is , I had a time struggling with my own mortality as I'm no spring chicken anymore and ive had many deaths in family and friends. I started to distance myself from these films. I'm getting back into them now . I noticed a distinction between shocking exhilarating horror and depressive psychosis horror like the shining . The difference is , slashers like Friday the 13th are fun , intense , exhilarating...and yes scary , but they don't crawl into your mind like the Shining or similar movies . There is always a point where a movie goes from fun to uncomfortable. To me Friday rode that edge but never went too deep . They all were fun except part 5 but 1 2 3 4 and 6 are all exciting great slashers .
One last word is - I want to thank the boomers ( in horror and heavy music) for busting their a##'es in making our childhoods fun ! No cgi , no green screen ...just live shot after shot until it was right .
I never thought I'd get choked up over slasher movies but I have as I remember my youth ! What a great time the 80s were !

1958 werden zwei Mitarbeiter eines Ferienlagers von einem Unbekannten getötet. Daraufhin wird das Camp geschlossen. Zwanzig Jahre später hat Steve Christy das heruntergekommene Camp übernommen. Warnungen der Bevölkerung zum Trotz möchte er mit einer Gruppe von jungen Erwachsenen das Lager für die Sommersaison wieder herrichten. Auch Annie ist eine der jungen Leute auf dem Weg nach Camp Crystal Lake, als sie in einer nahen Kleinstadt vor den Gefahren des Camps gewarnt wird. "Wie weit ist es zum Camp Crystal Lake?" - "20 Meilen, ungefähr." - "Das Blutcamp? Wird das etwa wieder eröffnet?" - "Viel Glück." - und DER ALPTRAUM KANN BEGINNEN...
KULTFILM (zahlreiche Fortsetzungen, Crossover, Remake) von 1980 mit Adrienne King als Alice, Harry Crosby (Sohn von Bing Crosby) als Bill, Laurie Bartram als Brenda, Jeannine Taylor als Marcie, dem 22-jährigen Kevin Bacon (Footlose, Flatliners, Hollow Man, Golden Globe-Gewinner für Taking Chance) als Jack, Mark Nelson als Spaßvogel Ned ("Komm dir nicht so schlau vor!" - "Ich? Ich bin doch doof wie 'ne Hupe."), Robbi Morgan als fröhlich-sympathische Köchin Annie ("Ich fürchte mich nicht vor Gespenstern."), Peter Brouwer als Campboss und in einer Nebenrolle Betsy Palmer (Keine Zeit für Heldentum 1955, Stern des Gesetzes 1957).
Durch den überraschenden Erfolg von John Carpenters Film Halloween (1978), der als Vorreiter der Slasher-Filme gilt, wurde Regisseur (und Produzent) Sean S. Cunningham (produzierte auch das Remake von 2009) zum Dreh von Freitag der 13. inspiriert. Mit einem Budget von gerade mal 500.000 US-Dollar wurde der Film in kürzester Zeit mit ausschließlich unbekannten Jungdarstellern - außer Betsy Palmer, die nur mitspielte, um sich ein neues Auto kaufen zu können (verriet sie in den Extras) - abgedreht. Die eindringliche (legendäre) Musik (tschü, tschü, hach, hach) schuf Harry Manfredini (erklärt in den Extras, wie er darauf kam, sollte man sich mal ansehen). Für die Special Make-up Effects und Stunts war wie schon in George A. Romeros Dawn oft he Dead (Zombie 1978) Tom Savini zuständig. Absolut GRANDIOS!
95 Minuten (und 17 Sekunden) der pure Ferienlager-Alptraum. Regen, Gewitter, Strip-Monopoly, ein bisschen Gras und Knutschen - und ein Killer, der keine Gefangenen macht. Absoluter Kultfilm! Ohne Wenn und Aber Note 1
Anmerkung: Die Blu-ray ist zwar aus Großbritannien, hat aber den gleichen deutschen Ton (Mono 1.0) wie meine alte Videokassette. Und sogar das Menü ist auf Deutsch. Ich bin total glücklich!
