When 1986’s The Morning After, starring Jane Fonda, Jeff Bridges and Raul Julia, and directed by Sidney Lumet was released, it was dismissed by most critics as a trashy mystery thriller and performed okay at the box office. But by the time Oscar nominations were announced, Fonda was named among the 5 Best Actress nominees that year without getting a single precursor mention including the Golden Globes and from critics groups like NYFC, NSFC, NBR etc. And if you look at the film’s IMDb awards tab, the Oscars was the only major award this film was up for!

So I wanna ask, how did that nomination happen?! Was it because of Fonda’s name, did the studio secretly made a campaign to get that film included, what was the reaction like when her name was announced as a nominee? This one is gonna be fun to analyze.

I suppose because many people voted for her.

As far as I can tell, Jane benefits from two outside factors –

    1. The Academy’s rejection of the two female leads in films they clearly loved: a) Mia Farrow for “Hannah and her Sisters” and b) Helena Bonham Carter for “A Room With a View”. The voters likely believed Carter too young for this first nod. As far as Mia Farrow, AMPAS has this clear bias against her – that’s the only explanation why she hasn’t got a single nod yet.

    2. The Academy’s alternatives to nominating the aforementioned actresses were very clearly outside their wheelhouse – in films they didn’t see or didn’t like or actresses they didn’t know or didn’t esteem (yet) – the leads of: Vagabond, Sid and Nancy, Something Wild, Blue Velvet, Betty Blue, etc.
