Other guests to attend the London event included divisive Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan, author Dylan and his glamorous wife Sarah Jones.

Elsewhere British actor Richard E. Grant made a welcome appearance, as did Spandau Ballet star Martin Kemp.

Jones' 576 page book, published by Penguin, charts Bowie's flamboyant life from humble beginnings to fame, fortune and considerable excess in London, New York, Los Angeles and Berlin - where he recorded some of his most conceptual work.

The hotel hosted the event, as David Bowie himself held an after-party at the Hotel Café Royal after his final performance as Ziggy Stardust at the Hammersmith Odeon on 3 July 1973.

Claudia's outing comes shortly after the BBC has revealed its top talent pay - with DJ Chris Evans topping the list with more than £2 million, dwarfing top-earning woman Claudia's pay packet.

The BBC darling was eighth in the list of highest earners, after Jeremy Vine, Humphrys, news reader Huw Edwards, broadcaster Steve Wright and presenter Matt Baker.

The top 10 includes just two women, Strictly Come Dancing and Radio 2 host Winkleman (£450,000-£499,999) and The One Show presenter Alex Jones (£400,000-£449,999).
