Joseph A. Zimmer, age 81, a resident of Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Joe was born on June 13, 1933 in Menominee Falls to the late Joseph F. and Viola A. (Stangel) Zimmer. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School, graduated from St. Norbert High School with the class of 1951, and completed his education by graduating from St. Norbert College in 1956. While in college, Joe was employed as a correspondent at the Green Bay Press Gazette and a newsman at WJPG Radio in Green Bay. He was the third generation and spent 38 years at J.J. Stangel Company until he retired as Vice President and Secretary on June 30, 1995. On September 16, 1961, Joe married Jolene A. Arsineau at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manitowoc. He was a life member and former local president of the Manitowoc Jaycees and a state Vice President of the organization; life member and former president of the Manitowoc Noon Optimists; member of the Manitowoc Elks Lodge #687; Knights of Columbus Council #710; served on the Board of Directors, as Treasurer, and Chairman of the Funding Committee for the Manitowoc County Historical Society; member and Chairman of the Board of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, member of the Manitowoc Golden Kiwanis; Safety, Traffic, Parking Commission for the City of Manitowoc; Manitowoc Yacht Club; charter member for Big Brothers Big Sisters; Roncalli High School Endowment Fund Committee; former member of the Manitowoc Serra Club. Joe was very active at Holy Innocents Catholic Church and formerly served as Trustee / Treasurer, President for the Board of Education, Treasurer for the Athletic Association, and a very special coach to many students. Joe was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. He was a lifelong fan of the Green & Gold, and in his own words, was the “Biggest (by size) avid Packer fan in Manitowoc.”

Survivors include Joe’s wife: Jolene; two daughters: Justine A. (Howard) Lodl, Green Bay, and Janeen A. (James) Olson, DePere; son: J.R. (Melinda) Zimmer, Jefferson, GA; eight grandchildren: Ryne and his fiancé, Tori, Jacob and his special friend, Megan, and Aaron Lodl; JaymeAnn Olson; and Kolin, Kelcie, Kylee, and Kedric Zimmer; brother: John J. (Bernie) Zimmer, Manitowoc; two sisters: Mary C. Zimmer and Anne C. Behrmann, both of Manitowoc; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Rev. William H. Zimmer; and father-in-law and mother-in-law: Raymond and Verona Arsineau.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo – 1121 North 14th Street, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Dan Felton with burial to take place at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Friday, May 22, 2015 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. A prayer service will be led by Rev. Gerald Foley at 7 p.m. to conclude the visitation. The visitation will continue at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.harriganparksidefuneralhome.com

The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory, North 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any memorials to Roncalli High School.

Joe’s family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to all his friends that visited him regularly keeping his spirits high, and also to his caregivers from Whitetail Estates, Harmony Living Center, and Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center for all the loving care and compassion they provided.
