GREENWOOD LAKE, N.Y. — Greenwood Lake’s famous castle is still for sale. The estate with the massive price tag and famous owner has been on the market 100 days.

The listing Wright Bros. Real Estate Inc. agent shared photos of the estate for publication with the stipulation the identity of the former professional baseball player who owns it would not be revealed.

A 24-room estate on the shore of Greenwood Lake in New York State has been listed for sale at $14.75 million.

Priced at $14.75 million, the property on the lake’s western shore in New York State is less than a baseball field away from the New Jersey state line.

Its 6-foot walls fail to hide the castle’s trademark stone turret. However, they do obscure a main house, guest house, pool house and boat house that contain 24 rooms, including six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, five half-bathrooms, two conference rooms and four kitchens.

There’s also a kitchen outside, where one can find an infinity pool, elephant-head fountain, private lagoon and model Statue of Liberty.

Diane Mitchell, the listing agent, said there has been a lot of interest in the 12,590-square-foot home off Lake Shore Road. It was featured before on NorthJersey.com and other media outlets when it was listed in June, she noted. There is one big obstacle to a sale, however. It is the cash-only sale price of $14.75 million.

Not many people have $15 million in cash, Mitchell said.

The castle was built in 1903 by a New York City doctor, Rudolph Gudewill, for his wife. Later converted from a private home into apartments, the structure fell into disrepair around the turn of the century.

A private lagoon is part of the estate on the shore of Greenwood Lake in New York State listed for sale at $14.75 million.

Greenwood Lake Properties LLC of Detroit purchased the property in 2003 for a mere $425,000. It subsequently embarked on a massive renovation completed in 2015, records show.

The lagoon was dredged. The lakeside bridge was repaired, and the outbuildings and home were clad with millions of dollars in stone.

The castle was also restored to a single-family home, reducing thenumber of bedrooms from more than two dozen to six. In 2004, the property was expanded to roughly four acres with an adjacent property purchased for $1.2 million, creating 700 feet of shoreline bowed toward West Milford, according to the list.

The annual property taxes are about $70,000, the listing continues.
