Video Quality
The 4K UHD Blu-Ray of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: The Complete Series is presented with a 2160p HDR transfer which maintains a consistent level of impeccable quality with this superior format. Each season is given two 4K UHD Blu-Rays discs for a total of eight discs. This package does not contain any accompanying Blu-Ray discs, leaving us unable to compare the two formats. What we can easily compare is the physical 4K UHD Blu-Ray presentation to the 4K UHD stream on Prime Video, and the benefits of a physical disc are easily noticeable when it comes to stability in compression and detail in shadows. The earlier seasons have moments that struggle slightly with compression artifacts, but this improves after the initial season.
This transfer thrives when it comes to depth, clarity, and stability within the frame. The range of locales visited this season is memorable as they deliver texture that makes you feel more present in the space of the series. The discs bring out a world of texture from the production design, environments, and costumes. Fans of the series will admit it is not dazzling in a candy-color way, but those who appreciate getting the deepest nuances out of their display are in for a treat. The HDR opens up the visual possibilities in really spectacular ways. Black levels are practically perfect, staying deep and inky with great detail. Highlights are firm with no moments of blooming on our radar. We are grateful that Paramount provided the series with a 4K UHD presentation.
Audio Quality
For an in-depth assessment of the audio of the earlier seasons, you can check out our reviews of Season 1 and Season 2. The audio assessment of seasons 3 and 4 can be found below:
This 4K UHD Blu-Ray comes with a fantastic Dolby Atmos presentation that rectifies the misstep of the 4K UHD releases for the first two seasons that reverted to a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio experience. While they were still powerful for what they were, we are glad Paramount got the memo that this series deserved the best audio presentation possible (especially since the Blu-Ray releases had superior audio). This full-force experience impresses sonically on a consistent basis from episode to episode. The scenes of important dialogue come through clearly in the front channel without being overshadowed by any sound effects or score.
The series continues to escalate in the back half with an array of action-packed moments in each episode that bring excitement to the track. The track has a fantastic sense of directionality with sounds always flowing from the appropriate point in the room. One of the fun benefits of an Atmos track is the addition of height channels which aid in fleshing out this world into a fully three-dimensional space. The low end also digs deep with quite a bit of wall-shaking when necessary. The score provides the correct atmosphere for this experience, filling the speakers well. This is the type of show where you want A+ audio, and Paramount got it right this time. There are English and English SDH subtitles provided.
Special Features
Season One
- Deleted Scenes: There are three minutes of unused material provided here which mostly add up to inconsequential moments that were trimmed for pacing reasons.
Season Two
- Deleted Scenes: Eleven scenes totaling about 17 minutes are provided here in their finished form in high definition. Most of these scenes are little throwaway moments, and only two contain Jack, but there is some interesting stuff here. The meatiest content is a multi-scene arc from episode 7 “Dios y Federacion” which features a cut-down plot of the Ubarri family attempting to assassinate Reyes. Worth checking out!
Season Three
- Deleted Scenes: An array of scenes are provided here in their finished form in high definition. Most of these scenes are little throwaway moments, but they are worth checking out for fans.
Season Four
- Deleted Scenes: An array of scenes are provided here in their finished form in high definition. Most of these scenes are little throwaway moments, but they are worth checking out for fans.
Final Thoughts
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan sometimes struggled to find the balance between character-driven storytelling and action-packed sequences, but the series entertained more than it didn’t. We sometimes wish the titular character exhibited some more of the traits that made him stand out in the Clancy source material, but this series delivers some thrilling action set pieces that you would rather not lose. In lieu of delivering something distinct, this journey delivers competency – and for those who want to zone out to thrilling intelligence antics that will be enough. Paramount Home Entertainment has provided a strong A/V presentation for the 4K UHD Blu-Ray set along with some special features to make things a bit more special. Fans of the series will be glad to have the entire run in one package. Recommended
