Gina Carano Wasn't Blacklisted, She Was Fired for Being Bad for Business

Gina Carano Wasn't Blacklisted, She Was Fired for Being Bad for Business

OPINION

Lucasfilm's successful streaming Star Wars show The Mandalorian has been in the news this week for reasons outside of its massive popularity. The show's sometimes co-star Gina Carano has had a history of posting her political views on social media. For example:

Carano Blacklisted

It's important to note that for a long time she had plenty of strange views she shared... and was not fired. This week finally crossed enough of a line for Disney/Lucasfilm to give her the ax

Gina Carano offensive post

Hey, it's Star Wars, it's political takes, and it's the internet. So things got hot in a hurry.

Cries from all corners about if it's fair, or right, or censorship, or comparable to HUAC and blacklisting are in abundance.

But they're all as confused and misguided, as Carano's original posts which aren't even as offensive as they are... laced with nonsense.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Lucasfilm firing Carano for this. And even more importantly... this doesn't mean Disney/Lucasfilm has a liberal agenda. Because guess what?

They don't. Neither does Hollywood.

Here is what Lucasfilm cares about: selling Star Wars

You know what makes it hard to sell a product?

When someone on the sales team is talking about Nazis killing Jewish people with the customers.

Imagine you manage or run a clothing store, and one of your sales reps keeps bringing up Nazis killing Jewish people to random customers trying to buy pants. If you ran the store, you'd say to the sales rep, "Hey... that makes people uncomfortable. Can you stop?" And if they didn't... you'd have to ask them to leave.

Because Carano isn't being silenced, folks. She can keep talking about how she's "just like a Jew being beaten to death in the streets" if she wants... she can even do it on public platforms. But she can't continue to sell Star Wars and do it because that hurts the business.

Don't conservatives love businesses? And their rights to run their business however they want?

This isn't like HUAC, when the government started questioning artists about their beliefs. This is just a business trying to sell its product. Carano is simply not doing a good job.

And yes, for a famous person on a major show, the social media presence they maintain is a huge part of their job. That's a reality now. It's still a free platform where they can say everything they want.

But not without consequences to their job!

That's why the idea of cancel culture is silly. It's not cancel culture. It's consequence culture. If you say something that pisses people off, there may be consequences. If you can't handle that, then be careful what you say.

But guess what?!

Carano ain't done yet. She's already in league with Ben Shapiro's Daily Wire for some new project. Yes, the Ben Shapiro of epic self-own fame:

Yeah, this project is gonna be GREEEEEAAAAT.

The trouble Carano is causing for her employer is not worth what she brings to the table. It's not just my opinion, it's something Steven Soderbergh had to deal with when he dubbed all her lines in Haywire

Because you know who can still get jobs and did for a long time after many far more offensive rants? Mel Gibson. Money doesn't care. What Carano brings to the table isn't worth the trouble. That's the bottom line.

At the end of the day, even though people want to turn this into a matter of political agenda and freedom of speech, it is 1,000% neither of those things.

It's very simple and boring. Carano is bad at and for business. Lucasfilm has no time for that.

Star Wars is a cash cow that costs Disney billions. They have no ability to suffer a fool who doesn't understand that using a public platform to talk about your weird confused political agenda is foolishness. The other important fact is that nobody ever got fired for simply being conservative.

For example, nobody got fired from Star Wars for talking about states' rights. Or advocating low tax laws. Or supporting deregulation and free trade.

Counterpoint: if she vocally supported progressive causes, would she still be employed?

Of course. Because a lot of them aren't bad for business. Did you watch the Superbowl this year? Did you see the ads?

Obviously certain liberal perspectives are selling right now.

The long and short of it is: don't be stupid. Look around you and read the room. If you want to earn your living in mainstream media, you have to.

Carano's next step will be earning her living in niche conservative media with Shapiro and The Daily Wire. See? She can still get a job! She's not being blacklisted

She's just making a really bad business decision. Because Disney is categorically bigger than The Daily Wire. Last time I checked.

But she's been making a lot of bad business decisions. And that's okay! She's allowed! Her passion is to compare herself to Jewish victims who were murdered by Nazis! Follow your bliss, Gina.

I'm a liberal and I don't think she deserved the ax. I'm Jewish and I didn't find her Nazi comparison offensive, just hyperbolic. I think this basically amounts to censorship and that it's dangerous when corporations have huge power over what you say in your personal life. I'm not categorically against firing people for what they say on social media, but I think it has gone too far.

Hey, Abe. She deserved the Axe. You don't have to be political or religious to know that and it'd not censorship when it's actively harmful, for once the Disney corporation did the right thing. Better to be mad at the actual bad things they're still doing. #TheMoreYouKnow.

Except progressives in Hollywood have spent the last 4 years yelling Nazi at everyone. Hell, Pedro tweeted comparing pictures of jailed immigrants with jailed Jews so that comparison is about as close as it is possible to get.

They merely used this as an excuse to attack and vilify her until she was fired and blacklisted for her political viewpoint... thereby proving within hours that the tweet they used to justify her firing was emphatically true and accurate.

How is that close? A group of jailed victims compared to a group of jailed victims.... Yeah that's easily comparable to an analogy comparing... wait for it... physically abused and mass-murdered victims to... people disagreeing over politics.

It's stupid to compare those two posts, and the truth is, through the lens of this post, its' stupid to compare them even if they WERE identical posts. Pedro isn't bad for business. he's the spearhead of a show and beloved by a lot more fans than a recurring character in a show who has no binding part of the show's central storyline. compared to Pedro she's unimportant, ergo, more fireable. No one forced her to write these idiotic tweets. Literally doing nothing would have taken a whole lot less energy and made a whole lot less grief for herself and others.

Pedro made a deliberately mendaciously comparison between a group of jailed victims of a singularly horrific regime - to a group of jailed people who broke a law that every single nation on the planet has in place to protect their borders. (it looks like he lied about where the picture was taken but that is a separate deceit)

You know this so why do you pretend you do not?

Gina very specifically and clearly compared the social assault and vilification of Jews that happened in Germany BEFORE the mass-murder was possible - to the social assault and vilification taking place today. This was immediately shown explicitly and emphatically to be accurate by the social assault and vilification of her.

You know this so why do you pretend you do not?

... no Clint, most of those jailed people, were people seeking ASYLUM! Which, FYI, is not a CRIME.

No, Gina was not "very specifically and clearly" to the social assault and vilification taking place today. She was very specifically and clearly pushing that conservatives are being treated the exact same way as Jews in NAZI Germany were prior to being rounded up.

She is a well known conservative who pushes some extremely far right views. She has attacked anyone she perceived to be liberals, multiple times. Her comment can only be taken in one way if you've followed her post history.

You know this, so why do you pretend you do not?

Apparently a fallacy of comparison equals abhorrent. Or anti Semitic. What a farce.
She said dont be like the nazis and have people target people... then they targeted her and fired her.
I guess Gina was right.
Even after Pedro pascal made the same comparison using nazis about kids in cages using a photo from ww2 to a picture of kids in cages--- which wasn't an actual picture of kids in cages in America but kids in Palestine at a food bank.
The hypocrisy is thick with disney.

Big lols right here- someone compares the violence of the holocaust to.... hating each other because of politics. then her being fired 'proves' her point? LOL
yeah she's stripped of all her worldly possessions, physically attacked by everyone around her then carted off with people just like her to die in a shower.

Yeah right she 'was right'. Apparently treating people like the adults they are is the holocaust now.

This writer might have their head farther up their own a$$ than any other “journalist” alive. So the Academy Awards only nominating movies based on the racial diversity of the crew isn’t a liberal agenda? All the “Mary Sue’s” popping up in movies (Rey, Captain Marvel, etc) isn’t a liberal agenda?? GTFO...

You say examples, but those are examples of just trying to cash in on liberalism. Don't tell me you actually think they believe in any liberal agenda do you? I would have thought conservatives would have believed that first and foremost more than anything related to hollywood.
Ergo, the article is correct. Like Disney, Hollywood etc is just an entire machine run on making money. Being popular = money. Being considered progressive = popular. It's not rocket science.

George,
This is problematic for a number of reasons. For one thing it is sloppy. You suggest that Gina Carano is too much trouble for her employer and then link to the Soderbergh article as if to suggest that he found her problematic. The article you link to states that with "Carano’s participation [Soderbergh] did some work to alter her voice for the film." Nothing in that suggests he found her difficult to work with, just that he made a creative decision to distance her performance from her public MMA persona.

Then, you selectively pick out tweets from Ben Shapiro, another right-wing media figure, to cast him in a negative light, just as you did with Gina Carano. Given the kinds of things you tweet about I could make you look just as extreme, if not more so, in about 10 seconds or less, but for now I will refrain from doing that.

As if that wasn't enough, you then write: "Obviously certain liberal perspectives are selling right now. The long and short of it is: don't be stupid. Look around you and read the room. If you want to earn your living in mainstream media, you have to." In other words, it is OK to have a political opinion as long as it is one that you agree with. Otherwise it is perfectly reasonable for you to lose your job when you share a different point of view even when not on the clock for an employer. How very open-minded of you!

You talk about consequences to actions. Well, if No Film School continues to run this kind of commentary, I will start to think of it less like a news platform and more like a propaganda palace, and I will go elsewhere for film updates.

Ben Shapiro casts himself in a negative light by himself. One does not have to TRY to do that to achieve it.
"Given the kinds of things you tweet about I could make you look just as extreme, if not more so, in about 10 seconds or less, but for now I will refrain from doing that." yeah right. No, please do that, because maybe you dont know much about the internet, but unfulfilled claims here are only ever done cause you can't do them, otherwise you would have. Please back up your claim or don't bother making it.
"In other words, it is OK to have a political opinion as long as it is one that you agree with. Otherwise it is perfectly reasonable for you to lose your job when you share a different point of view even when not on the clock for an employer. How very open-minded of you!" Lol. No one is FORCING you to share views that aren't popular dude. No one strong-armed her into sharing absurd and idiotic theories. Everyone has unpopular opinions but guess what? There's a time and a place for them. She chose to do this, she knew the potential consequences (spoiler: outrage, loss of job) and she knew the gains of posting them (spoiler, literally nothing, like any opinion posted on the internet, this one included). Navigating that doesn't meant you live in some thoughtcrime world. It means you're being an adult.

Spot on. Sorry about the garbage comments on this article from people who don't get it, but you're right in labeling this a business decision.

Let me scream this to the cheap seats:
• Freedom of speech is not FREEDOM FROM CONSEQUENCES.
• This is not censorship. She has not been silenced. Her Twitter account is still active and she's actually doubled down on her comments. She was FIRED, not censored. There is no law anywhere that guarantees you a job or forces your employer to put up with bad behavior.
• Hollywood loves MONEY more than anything else. That's the bottom line and that's what this article is about. The fact that studios tend to err on the side of social justice and progressive/liberal issues is because that's where they see our culture heading. If we lived in a society that openly rewarded racism, homophobia or sexism then they would change their tune. But guess what? We don't condone those behaviors (at least not publicly) and companies have found out the hard way that if they don't take a stand and come down on the right side of history then they're in big trouble. Don't believe me? Ask the MyPillow guy how his business is going. Or those bakers who wouldn't bake a cake for a gay couple.

Gina Carano and her opinions are bad for business. Disney is a corporation worth BILLIONS and they will not jeopardize a single penny of it on a second-string actor with shit opinions.

Period. Full stop.

You... you know gay people don't choose to be gay, right? Firing/not hiring people over something they can't control and doesn't affect their work is unethical, and isn't comparable to firing someone over their choice to post inflammatory takes on social media, which affect how people view their employer.

you have 3 functioning brain cells to allow you to see the very coherent and applicable dangerous principles Carano is speaking out against despite the fact she knows cowards or idiots or both like yourself will pitifully vilify her to earn your meaningless acceptance in the intolerant warped inconsistent revolting hate wielding bully mob little twits like you are so eager to join. You have no character - you have no mercy - you have no love or tolerance for anyone with the brains or the guts to tell you what shallow convictionless weaklings you are just to feel the ounce of pseudo courage you've never done a thing to deserve to feel about yourself. You will never have the internal strength of insight to take a stand in the name of right in the face of the ignorant mindless masses the way she does - yet you convince yourself you have a trace of something admirable by joining the the hypocritical thug crowds that lack even enough conscience to feel shame. You sincerely sicken me and I highly doubt you've ever accomplished anything of worth or stood for anything that required sacrifice. So please shut up and take a disappointing look at yourself before judging her on a public forum.

''McCarthyism, name given to the period of time in American history that saw U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin produce a series of investigations and hearings during the 1950s in an effort to expose supposed communist infiltration of various areas of the U.S. government.
The term has since become a byname for defamation of character or reputation by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations, especially on the basis of unsubstantiated charges.''

Hard to swallow pills: Gina isn't a huge star, she isn't a lynchpin of the franchise and is not important.
Hard to swallow pills: She is bad for business because of her idiotic beliefs
Hard to swallow pills: Even if the firing WERE virtue signalling related, conservatives have spent a generation enabling businesses to fire people indiscriminately for political views. Actions, meet consequences.
If you have a problem with this, put your money where your mouth is and stop watching The Mandalorian and other Disney stuff. Hopefully we'll still be able to enjoy it in peace without you.

Her post is just an opinion.... the fact that a fringe radical element are forcing the extreme censorship of opinions is terrifying. If you don’t like her opinion then stop watching ‘The Mandalorian’. I would bet everything that I own that viewing figures would not be impacted one fraction of a percent if she stayed with the show.
When are rational people going to stand up against this assault on freedom of speech and freedom of expression? Literally killing off careers and people for things said decades ago in different eras. All this 1984 thought policing creates is more animosity, it literally drives people into the arms of hardcore conservatives. Insane times, huge backlash is for sure coming as a vociferous minority cannot forever dictate how the majority live their lives.
Not once did her post actually say anything racist. Is her comparison over the top. Sure. Probably not the best comparison given the horrendous suffering involved but it’s just her opinion and she has to live with that.

Yes it’s cute that you feel the need to splatter that argument ‘ace in the hole’ on every comment here as if it’s relevant, but it doesn’t really prove anything. In fact, it proves the point of this article, that it’s about business. For example, who the fuck is Jack Morrissey? If he said something about MAGA kids going into a wood chipper, would I be likely to hear about it or stop watching the mandalorian? No? Oh well why should they fire him? He’s not bad for business and still no ones heard of him.

The ideas and ideals she harbors are ridiculous and dangerous, and this article brings up a great point about how she should no longer be a representative of the Star Wars brand because of it.

But, I want to go on record with this: she is also a horrible performer. Every line of dialog she delivered In The Mandalorian was flat and empty (not to mention, she was given lines that were pointless).

Well, it wasn't a good business decision for Lucasfilm's in this house. Because the Disney app is off the Apple TV now. I watch entertainment for escape. If Disney is going to be in the business of catering to the Salem Witch Hunt cancel culture I don't need that. I hope Gina Carano finds something much bigger and better than the over played cartoon that Star Wars spinoffs have become.

As much as id like to comment here, I've already been contacted and "threatened" by nofilmschool staff for having an opinion. seeing the world for what it is, in this case a monopoly board being supported by the working class isn't weird nor conservative. Talking about history in hopes of helping people understand the social warfare going on isn't wrong or racist nor conservative. what is wrong in the world but specifically in the west is the two factions that have successfully split the largely uneducated and unconscious "majorities". I was amazed to put the older disney cartoons on only to find a warning message stating that there was inappropriate and racist images. since when did portraying different culture become racist? we need to celebrate our few differences not sweep them under the rug. but at the end of the day I can be sure that only a select few have the courage and strength to stay true. if I was nofilmschool I would focus on technology and technique because having biased opinions is only going to scare away people who can see through that.

That's a fair opinion, and if nofilmschool starts to suffer because people stop reading because of societal critique articles, then they'll stop making those articles and focus on tech. You know why? Cause this article is right: it's all about business.

People are getting triggered up the ass because of the anti-conservative snark in this article, but the truth of the article's core is 100% fact: all of this is simply a business decision, free speech is not being trampled on, and Gina was being a bad employee in the pursuit of making money. All of those are facts. The reading of those facts by conservatives is what's slanted by the agenda here.

She should never have been cast and Jake Lloyd should feel vindicated for no longer being the worst actor in Star Wars because Gino Carano is most certainly, and without question, the worst.

Luckily she’s also got her head so far up in space and wanted to share that with the world, she gave Disney the out.

Yeah. Sure. Yadyyadyyady justifyady. Liberalspeak would've gotten - does get - a free pass and some can even burn down minority businesses without any smackdown. Your examples are self-serving to say the least. And you clearly don't know what blacklisting is. And you have even less of an understanding of cancel culture and the true nature of the Nazi movement. Pull your head out of the, 'er, sand and look at the ever increasing number of censorship activities all done by liberal "business leaders". What I can't understand is why these gigundo censorship centers aren't being sued for discrimination - a topic Ms. Carano should consider. And Gina, the difference is what's going on now is a slippery slope to the next step.
