Warning! Spoilers for Loki episode 2 ahead.

Loki episode 2 ended with something of a cliffhanger after the TVA's Loki decided to follow Lady Loki into the time portal; the question now is why? The premiere of the latest Marvel Studios/Disney+ series mostly revolved around establishing the premise of its narrativ, but it ended with an unlikely and precarious partnership with Agent Mobius M. Mobius. Episode 2 properly set up the God of Mischief's new mission and in the end, unveiled the narrative's villain — Lady Loki

Aptly titled "The Variant," the Loki episode dealt with the TVA putting Loki to work, as he's briefed by Miss Minutes. At this point, the trickster was acting all cooperative as he joined his first fieldwork at a Renaissance Fair in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Loki tried to betray the cause; fortunately, Mobius called his bluff in time. With the TVA's patience wearing thin, Loki is forced to properly cooperate. The adopted Asgardian prince went to work and started to really look for ways to nab his more evil counterpart. His efforts paid off when he figured out that that variant they are looking for hides in apocalypse settings to elude her hunters. Lady Loki was indeed in Haven Hills, Alabama in the year 2050, hiding at a Roxxcon Supermarket. After engaging in a verbal and physical tussle with Loki, she successfully executed her plan — bombing the Sacred Timeline using countless reset charges she stole from the Minutemen.

As the TVA descended into chaos, while Mobius and his people searched the place for their accomplice, Lady Loki casually strolled into a time portal and after a second or two of indecision, Loki followed her. But why? Given the situation, this effectively makes him a TVA target, as it certainly looked like he betrayed them by joining his fellow Loki. But, it might not be as simple as the God of Mischief wanting to escape. Despite their not-so-ideal introduction, Lady Loki clearly said that her mission doesn't concern Loki, meaning that she has nothing personal against him. That in itself is a reassuring thought for the Asgardian royalty. But more than anything, it piqued his interest. Since they're essentially mirror versions of each other, Loki knows that there's a deeper reason why Lady Loki is on this crusade to terrorize the TVA and Time-Keepers; she can't be pure evil, because as he said earlier in the episode, no one is.

Loki Episode 2 Lady Loki Reveal

Since Lady Loki doesn't have anything against him, chances are that Loki's safety is guaranteed, unless he does anything to outright antagonize the variant. However, that may not be the case. As seen in trailers for the Loki show, at one point, the pair peacefully sits down while seemingly watching the end of time. This hints that, eventually, the two Lokis will develop a bond. Perhaps, as Loki learns about what motivates Lady Loki's actions, he realizes that she's not all that bad; she could even be fueled by a good cause. In any case, considering that Loki is already dubious of the Time-Keepers, he figured joining this variant is a better use of time than being an operative for the TVA. This is despite the trust and support he got from Mobius, whom he fully knows would be in trouble for his escape. Then again, considering how blinded he is with the loopholes in his organization, maybe understanding Lady Loki's real plan can finally make him realize the flaws of the TVA.

In the event that Lady Loki's plan turned out to be nefarious and she needs to be stopped by the TVA, following her would still be the best move for the God of Mischief. Since the variant can change appearances, he knew that it would be difficult to nab catch her again if she gets away this time. If Loki is secretly sticking with the TVA, then this would give them an advantage. So while the decision to follow her into the time portal could backfire on him, it's a calculated risk he decided to take that could result in big rewards.
