This album doesn't disappoint. After hearing the latest Killswitch Engage effort, I needed to get the bad taste out of my mouth. I hate to compare BYD to KSE but they exist in the same genre more or less. Bury Your Dead has a very unique sound though and I liked some of the songs from their last album so I decided to pull the trigger on this one. This album and Chimaira: The Infection are my favorite albums so far in 2009 which has been full of disappointment over all. This is a true metal gem and will likely be my favorite album of 2009 unless there's a metal miracle. Love the loud and heavy guitars, booming drums, and haunting vocals. Album sounds great and the crushing energy is hella sweet! ROck on!

So if you are a hardcore Bury Your Dead fan, this is the worst album they have released by far... all of the harmonizing that they try and attempt in this album is awful. I loved Bury Your Dead until this... this is just utter disappointment... What happened to the Beauty and Beatdown hardcore style? These guys went from one of my top favorite bands to nearing the bottom of my list after this album... Don't get me wrong the music is still great, but the vocals are no longer hardcore, they are not very harmonizing either, actually when he trys to sing it reminds me of a sick Corey Taylor, because we all know Corey Taylor can sing his ass off, but Mike Terry really blew it for the entire band on this one... plus honestly all of the songs sound the same... what a horrible album, and a huge disappointment...

Nearly 20 years ago my buddy's brother handed me a memorex tape labled "Strap It On". It was 20 minutes of amazing. No solos (unheard of at the time), growling, fierce, detuned madness. It was the best thing I'd ever heard. A lot of the reviews compare "It's Nothing Personal" to Killswitch or Sevendust, but I hear something older. Sevendust only has about 10 songs and has somehow managed to release about 60 albums. Killswitch has more technical guitar work and complex song structures. BYD has been my Helmet for this generation. Heavy, heavy and more heavy...did I mention heavy?
"It's Nothing Personal" has the jackhammer percussion, monster riffage, and most importantly, the best breakdowns in metal. The vocals are okay, but I just don't see them as the dealbreaker some do. BYD has 3 full albums of screamed vocals. If they aren't going to do something a little different, why bother? I've also heard that this is their "softest" release. That's like saying getting punched in the head hurts less than getting kicked in the nuts. With the exception of the two closing tracks (that are more atmospheric than soft), not one single minute of this CD will be played on mainstream radio - it is a beast.
"Deadend Lovesong" and "Lion's Den" are every bit as good as any iteration of BYD has released. The drumming and bass are freaking brilliant and the electronic textures sprinkled throughout make each of the songs stand alone. If I have any complaints, it would be the lyrics. We get it, a girl broke your heart and now you're going to right about it...12 times. How bout a song about beating someone down or...beating someone down. Just anything other than the constant crying.
I'm a HUGE fan of "Cover Your Tracks", " You Had Me At Hello" and "Beauty and the Breakdown". I thought "Bury Your Dead" was unfairly critisized and "It's Nothing Personal" is in the same boat. 3.5 Stars - not their best work, not the best metal album of the year, but still much better than most.

Bury Your Dead has certainly made a deviation from their previous releases with "It's Nothing Personal". Quite possibly a gasp of fresh air for the artist.
The major change is in the singing style of Myke, who made a significant deviation from the powerful yelling, which so many bands of the genre hold dear, to a mix of yelling/clean vocals. This seems to give off a sound reminiscent of bands like Killswitch Engage, though not of the same caliber. The hard-hitting sound that fans of BYD have come to love is still there, as evidenced in songs like "Hurting Not Helping", "Broken Body", "Lion's Den", and "Swan Song"...just with an inclusion of melodic choruses. This does little to hurt the beat of the songs, but distracts from the overall hard-factor that the style of past albums had set forth.
With that being said, it may be the beginning of a road to refinement of the BYD style. Without doubt, this band already has their own sound, but that sound has tended to produce some amount of monotony/similarity between songs over the past several albums (the main riff of "Dust To Dust" vs. "Legacy of Ashes" comes to mind). This album begins to break those bonds while maintaining most of their sound.
This writer's impression of the change is one of indifference. BYD still sounds great and worthy of headbanging! Future releases will dictate whether or not this "refinement" will be taken any further, and if it will be for better or worse. For the time being, this metamorphosis feels somewhat incomplete.
