To whom would I like to say sorry? Chickens, because I ate them

Isabella Rossellini, 60, was born in Rome, the daughter of actor Ingrid Bergman and director Roberto Rossellini. She made her film debut in 1976, in her mother's film A Matter Of Time. From 1979 to 1982, she was married to the Raging Bull director Martin Scorsese. Rossellini was the face of Lancôme for 14 years, until it dropped her when she turned 40. She starred in Blue Velvet, Death Becomes Her and the TV series 30 Rock. More recently, she has been studying biology and made a series of films called Green Porno about the sex lives of animals, as well as designing a handbag collection for Bulgari.

Where would you like to live?
In the wild, studying animal behaviour, like Jane Goodall does.

What is your greatest fear?
Getting sick.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Workaholic.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Rudeness.

What is your most treasured possession?
A series of photos of my parents by marvellous photographers such as Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Robert Capa, Chim Seymour, Henri Cartier-Bresson.

If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose?
Dodos, passenger pigeons, Tasmanian tigers, quaggas – animals that went extinct recently.

Who would play you in the film of your life?
My husbands – both of them. It would be fun and interesting.

What is your most unappealing habit?
Being impatient.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Eating spaghetti.

What is your favourite word?
Magari and mannaggia – Italian words that can't be easily translated. Magari is a bit like God willing, and mannaggia a bit like damn it.

What is the worst thing anyone's said to you?
"You still look beautiful."

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I seldom look at myself to avoid any self-criticism.

To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?
Chickens, because I ate them.

Have you ever said 'I love you' and not meant it?
Of course.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Charles Darwin.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
"It's great!" and "I love it!"

What is your favourite smell?
Orange blossom.

What has been your biggest disappointment?
That my children never met my parents. They were both dead by the time I became a mamma.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
I like it now – no corsets, women with the vote, greater freedom. It's the best century for women.

How do you relax?
Walking and swimming.

What keeps you awake at night?
Taking a flight the next day.

What song would you like played at your funeral?

How would you like to be remembered?
I would like to be forgotten. What's so good about being remembered?

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Anything goes.
