About the Author

Arvid Nelson was raised by a pack of wild Nintendo cartridges in the wilderness of southern Connecticut. He worked on several films before deciding to focus on graphic novels. Since then he's written over a dozen titles, including two original series - Rex Mundi, set in 1930s Europe where magic is real and the Catholic Church never lost its grip on power, and Zero Killer, an "alternate present" where the United States never dropped Atom bombs on Japan. He's worked for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Dark Horse Comics, to name a few.

Zid was born 2 days after Christmas in 1983, and he is living his childhood dream drawing and painting what he has always been most passionate about: comics. He is a multidisciplinary artist based in Malaysia and was nominated at #8 in 10 Comic Book Creators To Watch in 2013 on Newsarama.com for his maiden project with Robert Napton. His career with Legendary Comics began with Trick ‘r Treat: Monster Mash in late 2015. This work relationship continued with the digital graphic novel prequel to the Netflix movie Spectral: Ghosts of War in 2016, and his biggest responsibility yet, Skull Island: The Birth of Kong in 2017. After a change of terrain with Lost in Space: Countdown to Danger, he returned to Skull Island for Kingdom Kong. In his free time (which is not a lot), you can see him updating his social media accounts with his slice of life comic as a work-from-home dad under the hashtag #DOAWFHD.

Arvid Nelson worked on a couple of films after college, ranging from Woody Allen's Small Time Crooks to Troma Productions' The Toxic Avenger Part IV. As much as he enjoyed fetching coffee and sleeping in rat-infested warehouses, he decided to drop out and write comics, and he hasn't looked back.

Ten years later, he's finally delivered the coup de grâce to Rex Mundi, his first published work, as well as Zero Killer, another comic he's been working on for a Really Long Time. He's written for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and Dynamite Entertainment.

Arvid lives in Northampton, Massachusetts, with a loving wife and a large television. He enjoys lifting weights and writing about himself in the third person. This graphic novel was great. The MonsterVerse is still a struggling cinematic universe but in my opinion, it has great potential and this work is a great example of that. Reading Birth of Kong helps flesh out the nature of Monarch, shows the dedication of the writers to create an ongoing, developing continuity, and tells great stories with unforeseen twists. Have a read to enter the space of exploring this version of reality.

This is interesting because it labels itself as a prequel, but most of the events of the story takes place 20 years after the events of the movie. The "prequel" parts are flashbacks of sorts. The story itself didn't reveal a whole lot to quite justify it's length, but it was still interesting nonetheless. The back of it has some "extra files" describing all the "animals" on the island, including some that dont show up in the movie or comic.

The pictures themselves seemed a little difficult to pick out details. I'm not sure if it's the material it is printed on, a lack of contrast in the art, or I'm just not used to it.

I was pleased with this sequel/prequel story to the Legendary WB movie of Kong of Skull Island, this was a novel way of telling the back story of the LWB incarnation of Kong, as well as developing a little more story behind the Monarch organisation.
Great art work, and a nice pop corn story line.
