Awesome time biking this trail. Everything was clean and safe and the people we met were friendly. We parked near Eastern Market and took the trail to the river then kept on to Bell Isle. Fine time!

This was a perfect fall activity with friends. We jumped in the path at the Rastern Market and walked to the River downtown. Would have continued on the river walk but it was getting late. We enjoyed the new outdoor Pub station I think it is called the Freightyard. Music, a bar, and food truck. Then headed down the path to see some amazing graffiti, reproductions of classic art donated by the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA). Saw some exercise equipment to jump on if desired as well as a block long park with flowers and trees. Very delightful to look up and see the city and sounds of urban life as well as the fresh air and friendly faces of other users. Definitely hitting this gem again soon and taking more friends.

Anyone who is looking for something free to do and is fun, must do this. A beautifully paved path from Mack ave all the way down to the Detroit River. An easy ride or walk if you want. Once you get to the river, them you have great views of downtown and across the river to Canada.

More than ten years after opening, I decided it was time to check out the Dequindre Cut. It's a very nice place to go for a walk, with nice scenery, and separate lanes for pedestrians and bikes. I wish I had explored it sooner.

Dequindre cut is a public recreational path that used to be a railroad. Its sunken below grade and the "walls" at overpasses and various other spots along the path are covered with first rate street art. The cut runs from Gratiot south to the river front. All along the way there are things to do and sites to see. Stop in Easter Market, one of the country's oldest markets, on Saturdays for produce and Sundays for crafts. There are SO many cool, independent shops and bars in the market area. Check out the Freight Yard containers for music and shops (google Detroit Freight Yard). Take the cut all the way south to the river and stroll along the Riverfront. We live here and still go here very often. Its not "touristy". It a genuinely cool place to spend a Saturday.

The Dequindre Cut is a walk / bike / run path with TONS of graffiti art. What used to be rail road line, is now scenic paved path. It ends on the south end of the River Walk, just past the nature preserve.

If you like the outdoors, and want feel like you are in a rural area in the middle of Detroit, then the Dequindre Cut is the place for you.

On a typical day, you will see families, couples young and old, and athletes along the route.

The Dequindre Cut, as it is called, is a railway bed now converted to a walking-biking-hiking trail. Currently beginning south from the pedestrian plaza on Atwater, it runs north to Gratiot avenue. This is a great urban innovation in a "rails to trails" sort of way. Pedestrians as well as nonmotorized travel is permitted. The long abandoned railway tracks and accompanying debris have been replaced with beautifully landscaped berms, native plant species and paved walking surfaces. Leisurely bikers, lively rollerbladers, and children skipping toward our fabulous Riverwalk are a daily warm season sight. It is safe, clean and will lit, with plenty of emergency call boxes in sight. Bench seating is also in abundance for weary sightseers. Although opened since 2009, new fitness equipment has been recently installed just south of Jefferson avenue.
Phase 2 is well underway which will extend from Gratiot to Mack Ave., with an
Entrance ramp to Eastern Market. So far so good.

Dequindre Cut is a pathway for joggers, walkers and bikers from Eastern Market to the Riverfront. It's been freshly landscaped and passes through new and old walls of graffiti artwork and views of Detroit. Perfect destination to take visitors or just to stroll for something funky to do. I love combining a walk down Dequindre Cut with a shopping trip to Eastern Market for fresh produce. Makes for a perfect Saturday morning in Detroit!

We walked a brief stretch to wrap up our visit to the Eastern Market on a Tuesday morning. Accessed the "cut" at Mack Avenue and decided to end our walk near Gratiot. Nothing going on. No food vendors. No music. I guess we just hit the "cut" on the wrong day of the week. Quite frankly it was nice but not the big deal the local press has made it out to be.Perhaps there is real buzz on weekends.
