Species list

The Species at Risk Act (SARA) establishes Schedule 1, as the official list of wildlife species at risk. It classifies those species as being either extirpated, endangered, threatened, or a special concern. Once listed, the measures to protect and recover a listed wildlife species are implemented. More on the listing process>

Species that were designated at risk by COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada) prior to October 1999 must be reassessed using revised criteria before they can be considered for addition to Schedule 1 of SARA. Species that are on Schedule 2 or 3 are not automatically included on the List of Wildlife Species at Risk. Once they are reassessed, the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister, decides on whether or not they should be added to the List.

Please note that species included in the Public Registry, reflect those published in the Act on the date of proclamation. This includes those species from Schedules 1, 2, and 3. Any newly assessed wildlife species will not be included until they have been added to the List by order in council. You may also use the search tool to search species.
