Is it Bullshit?: Avisail Garcia porked Prince Fielders wife which resulted in a fight and Garcia getting traded.
Ive heard this multiple times. Is this factual? Is there credible source or a team press release about the incident? Or just speculation
Don’t forget the part where Cabrera hurt himself breaking the fight up!
And has never hit the same after
Please tell me you're joking
It's technically an unconfirmed rumor that pretty much nobody has outright denied.
I think he tried to. That's a really dumbass move,(morals not withstanding) considering the position he was in, not to mention prince fielder is fucking huge.
Yeah, but Prince is huge in the fat sense. Not the muscular sense.
guy could still absolutely murder a baseball. not a guy on my list to be fucking with, even if i was Garcia
Prince Fielder could probably take your arms out of their sockets.
Like pulling chicken wings apart.
Nah man, he’s a vegetarian. It’s more like shredding a head of lettuce by snappin his fingers.
Mass is mass.
Plus, you have to be pretty fucking quick AND strong to hit moonshots like he did off any speed pitch.
He also has 2 career inside-the-park homers and 10 triples
Maybe it was like Major League and Fielders wife did Garcia to get back at her husband for his unfaithfulness.
"I didn't know who she was! I swear to God!"
"Strike this motherf'er out!"
Forget about the curveball Ricky. Give ‘em the heater
This is true. It was a big deal. It split the locker room. Garcia was considered the future of the franchise. He was even nicknamed “Little Miggy”. Once this news broke, he was soon after put on the IL and on his way out. We should’ve traded Fielder. Denny McLain talked about it on a radio show the following season
I have heard from many Tigers sources this is true but Denny McLain isn't the best source, guy is a legendary bullshitter
You’re absolutely right
We did trade Fielder….
Should’ve just* traded Fielder
Why would you want a guy on your team who is the most ultimate version of a locker room cancer? It doesn't get much worse than fucking a teammate's wife.
To be honest, I don’t care if these guys are good guys or not. I don’t care if they get along. I just want them to perform. He was a good player and became a better one in Chicago.
Meanwhile, the guy who started a fight with him because of the “code” claiming moral high ground (Cabrera) turned out to be a piece of shit husband and father with secret families he’s paid off. He’s a good ball player though.
I don’t hold these guys to some high standard as people. They’re just people. I just like watching them play for my favorite team.
I don’t know them. They don’t know me. They play. I watch. My connection is to the team, not the player.
I’d argue we didn’t trade Garcia, specifically, as a result of this incident.
We traded him, along with Villarreal, for Iglesias because we needed a good shortstop as we were still competing.
Now, in hindsight, should we have kept Garcia?
Probably but I think this version is a bit of revisionist’s history.
I know someone in the tigers organization who has confirmed to me this happened so I sure as hell believe it
The people answering that this is definitely true are disregarding the rest of your post where you ask "Is there credible source or a team press release about the incident? Or just speculation." There isn't any reliable source for this and yes, it's all speculation.
It's worth noting that Cabrera's injury that often gets linked to this speculated fight happened in May. The rumor of an affair got started in July and after Garcia got traded people retroactively made up a speculated clubhouse fight to explain both Miggy's injuries and Fielder's shitty year at the plate. If it did happen that way, that means the organization decided to keep on the young guy who started team-crippling personal drama with franchise players for several months after the fact. Not very likely.
The only thing we actually know is that Prince and Channel Fielder had marriage issues in 2013 that were reported to be settled afterwards. And for what it's worth, here's a picture of the family a few months after the rumor and immediately after his trade to Texas - which, were the rumor true, would be a consequence of her actions - looking rather happy. https://twitter.com/RealPFielder28/status/405123689487671296
Edit: People also forget Garcia was traded in a waiver deadline three-team deal for Iglesias, who was a position we needed to fill amidst a playoff run, which wasn't even a trade Dombrowski was preparing to make until Peralta was suspended. AND he was traded to our division rival. Not really a "get this guy out of town" move.
Honestly a simple application of Occam's Razor should be enough here, but failing that, human decency should be the modus operandi when considering another's personal shit we actually know zero about.
You cannot say that there isn’t a reliable source. There just isn’t an on-the-record source but there could be a very credible, confidential source or sources. Here is another one that I’d bet my life on: Vinnie Johnson was screwing Dennis Rodman’s wife. That was what led up to Rodman being found in his car with a gun at the Palace.
Then there isn't a source. There is no indication the rumor came from within the organization. It was originally posted on a small time, now deceased sports blog for fuck's sake. None of the journalists in the headline-driven, drama-craving sports world even sniffed in the story's direction. If there's a body of evidence against it and no actual verified source for it, I don't see how a working brain can run with the narrative as if it's true.
This just in: Al Avila found on Jeffrey Epstein's flight logs. The only evidence I have is that somebody somewhere might confidentially know about it, possibly.
The Watergate story broke and Nixon was forced to resign based on an unnamed source. Because the source isn’t known to the public doesn’t make it unreliable. It’s just unverified. The local writers never publish stories like that. If they do then the team will treat the writer with contempt and there goes any interview opportunities.
Sorry, I was the guy that broke it first for that "small-time, now deceased sports blog" (it really was). Still won't reveal my sources, though I will state two are still working for the organization, just like I won't reveal my sources for being the first to break the Evan Reed story, even though I'm out of the industry and journalism in general.
It DID occur. It IS how Miggy and JV were injured in 2013, both of which were impactful on their careers long-term. The reason for the delay in what to do was deciding between trading away the huge contract and eating a chunk of it, or trading away the future franchise slugger. Neither option was good, so Avi was sent to AAA for a bit, then traded for...Jose Iglesias, because no one at the trade deadline wanted to take on Prince's contract (he was on the trade block at the time as well) until after the season, when we got Kinsler for him. That DP combo didn't pay off as hoped.
It's still insane that we only got Iglesias in that deal, and the White Sox were the only team interested in Avi at the time. That trade:
White Sox got Frankie Montas and Avisail Garcia Red Sox got Jake Peavy and Brayan Villarreal Tigers got Jose Iglesias.
That SCREAMS get rid of him.
Oh damn I forgot all about that rodman ordeal
I’ve always taken it as too good of a story that tied up too many loose ends, but when you saw him play against the Tigers afterwards there wasn’t the usual friendliness between he and anyone else that you typically see when a player is dealt in a trade.
Just my observation.
It was confirmed to me personally by someone who worked within the organization and witnessed the break up of the fight outside the locker room.
True, I had a friend who was a ball boy behind the scenes at the time, he said everyone knew and it created great tension in the clubhouse. It’s why we traded him for Iglesias. Fuck that pos Avisail Garcia, hope nothing but bad things for him in life, I spit when I hear that name mentioned.
Well, it was on Reddit, so it must be true.

Lol I saw that tweet to. I was too young and not as involved in sports as I am today, but I do remember the a story about Prince getting a divorce because his wife cheated
It's true. I was there.
Did you see that tweet?
Goes to show how poor the Detroit sports beat reports are and how they are nothing more than team spokesman. There would be a 30 for 30 documentary if this happened to the Yankees. They still haven’t even reported on why the Wings captain took a week off. This silence wouldn’t happen in other markets.
Yes ive heard this is true too and I really don’t think the team would say anything about it. They did trade Avisail shortly after though.
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire
Crazy but it’s true. Everything lines up way too well when you read about it. Multiple people who were within the organization said it happened.
