Does anyone here remember when Mr. Wizard's World was airing in the really early morning hours in the early 90s?

Believe it or not, Mr. Wizard's World aired reruns consistently without a break until August 2000, where it last aired. It was moved to the 6AM slot in 1992 and eventually, it only aired within the cable in the classroom half hour slot, which teachers would record to show during class as part of educational curriculum from what i've heard. I'm pretty sure the reason it stayed on for as long as it did was because it was an educational show that was successful when it was on before being moved to really early morning hours, which made it perfect for the cable in the classroom half hour block

Most people don't recall Mr. Wizard's World still being on even when shows like Hey Arnold! and Angry Beavers were premiering or even as far back as when Rocko's Modern Life and Legends of the Hidden Temple were premiering because it was only airing super early in the morning by then, but it technically was still on. It was not only the final leftover from the silver ball era of Nickelodeon, but also the final leftover of 80s Nickelodeon, atleast when it came to airing regularly

Yes. My memories of this show are while I am half asleep waiting for my parents to take me to daycare

I recall being fairly young and wondering what it would be like to stay up all night and see the sun rise. And also to see what came on immediately after Nick at Nite.

It was pretty anticlimactic. There was like 2 hours of paid programming at the conclusion of Nick at Nite. But then Mr. Wizard’s World came on and I was like holy shit I haven’t seen this in a while. That made the whole thing worth it.

Yes yes yes!

I used to wake up around 5 or 6 AM, and my dad would fix me a little pre-breakfast of frosted mini wheats and a cup of milk (I used to always drink it from a little blue cup), then I’d sit in front of the TV and watch Mr. Wizard’s World. If that wasn’t on, then I’d watch Nick Arcade.

This is one of my earliest memories of my childhood.

Deep childhood memory unlocked. Loved that Mr. Wizard intro. Even though it was before school and educational, it was still tons of fun to watch him conduct experiments with fellow kids at the time.

I remember. Flipper was on before or after it iirc.

Flipper was on before in 1994.

Maybe that's when I'm remembering it from. Idk, I'm too old

Followed by Maya the Bee, Heathcliffe, then Eureka's Castle

Whoa, I’m impressed because that’s a weekday lineup. I only got to enjoy that lineup in sick days.

Loved this show, typically would come on when getting ready for school.

Yup. Watched it most mornings before we'd walk to school. It was a very big part of my childhood. I wanted that robot so bad!

I have always been a poor sleeper. Mr. Wizard really was a highlight of my mornings back then.

I later learned Mr. Wizard and I share a birthday.

Yeah.

When I was a kid I'd stay up all night a lot for some reason.

No idea if it was insomnia or what, but I still remember the feeling of having that early morning light coming through the window while I watched Mr. Wizard.

I was so excited during one episode when, just before the commercial break, he said that he would teach us how to lift a car with one hand… I was so excited to show off to everyone but it ended up just using a jack 😭

Yes I do, and I remember Mr. Wizard was often a jerk, which is really funny if you check it out on YouTube. Can't believe he got away with all that lol

I don’t remember him being a jerk, but watching it now in hindsight he was tricking the kids all the time and telling them how wrong they were. I loved that show. I hope I am as cool as Mr. Wizard as I age.

I had the Supermarket Science book.

Me too!! Memory unlocked!

Yes, I remember. Would watch it while getting ready for school.

Same!

Haha lol I yes sometimes I would get up early and watch Mr. Wizard before school. They even had this weird “Cable in the CLASSROOM” bumper lol. Also, a lot of times I’d get up early on Saturday mornings and watch Flipper or Lassie, and then Nick Arcade would come on. And then that was the cue for my dad to come downstairs 🤣

If I recall, they would air commercial free during that block.

I remember watching it in the late-80's when You Can't Do That On Television was still on and Nick at Nite still aired Mr. Ed.

Yep i would wake up early before my dad left for work and he would watch the news before he got around and I would turn the channel while he took a shower and watch Mr. Wizard and Gilligan's Island.

Mr. Wizard on Nickelodeon and Mousercise on Disney Channel.

I always watched it on sleepovers at my grandparents’ house! We didn’t have cable, so I loved going over there. Plus, my grandma woke up daily at 5:00, and it was a treat to get up that early. I loved getting up while it was still dark, eating whatever junk breakfast I was allowed over there, while I watched Mr. Wizard.

I did during the standardized testing days in elementary school lol

I woke up hella early to eat a good breakfast and do whatever, and watched this and Ghostwriter.

Me and my cousins still randomly laugh about staying up all night at our grandmas house to watch Mr. Wizard as it never occurred to us in the summers to just wake up earlier and watch it lol

I know I watched it if I happened to be up that early, but being aware at the time that it was an old show.

In most cases that wasn't a big deal, but when I have an SNES and I'm watching Mr. Wizard take apart an Atari 2600 joystick...

Most of the computer stuff stood out as outdated as well.

Loved those 80s animated opening credits “Hmmm, hmmm, Aha!” 💡

I would literally stay up all night in the summer to watch it.

Then crash from 6 am to noon.

I remember. I used to try staying up early in the mornings because The Adventures of Tintin came on for a bit then, but they abruptly did away with that.

I woke up real early as a kid and would watch this show.

I remember. My dad would wake us up by getting ready for work and I would just get up and watch tv. I could not believe that Mr Wizard was still on. I watched his show in the mid 80’s.

I remember it vaguely.

Yes! Early morning treat

Yesss I loved waking up and watching Mr. Wizard's World right before school!

Oh yes! I loved it, lol. I watched it every morning before school for a few years.

I watched a lot mid 90s. Up until that point I didn't know Mr. Wizard was real I'd heard a few mentions in other shows like "who do you think you are Mr. Wizard" . I assumed either it was just a saying or it had to be an old show that people barely remembered.

It is weird that when I bring up Mr. Wizard to people around my age (39) they don't always remember. I think of him as a no-frills pre Bill Nye or Beakman's World. I also remember the first time I ever checked out a book from a public library that wasn't my school's library that it was one of the Mr. Wizard experiment books.

Yes sometimes I'd wakeup early, my dad would already be awake working at his desk in our sun room and I'd watch Mr. Wizard.

Yes!!

u/SirCalebCrawdad avatar

Yep. Actually woke up early to watch it in the early 90s. It was fantastic.

I would watching it getting ready for school and my dad worked nights so he would sometimes watch it with me when he was coming home from work about that time. That or Mickey mousercise on the Disney channel. Good memories.

I do. I remember getting up at 5 a.m. ET to watch GI Joe on Fox, and then changing over to Nick and watching Mr. Wizard at 5:30 or 6 before school.

Yep, in the 80''s too.

I used to love that show and watched it before school.

u/WitchessJae avatar

One of my favorite Nick shows!! I have a few episodes on VHS. I had my favorite kids on the show and everything.

u/Altruistic_Rock_2674 avatar

I do remember the show as a kid but I didnt know it aired that long. Early morning was good for science shows

I would watch it half awake before school, having jumped in too far into the experience to ever know what they were really after or out to demonstrate. Side note, I loved how the Jim Henson show “Dinosaurs” had Mr. Wizard cut scene where the kid helper kept getting killed in experiments “we’re gonna need another Timmy”

Absolutely love Mr. Wizard.
