Today’s the day sports icons will unite from around the world, lighting torches and celebrating global connection through competition. The Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony takes place today at the Japan National Satium in the Shinjuku ward of Tokyo, in a stadium that could seat up to 68,000 spectators. But there won’t be fans this year to keep everyone safe and healthy; instead, 10,000 diplomats will get to watch the Opening Ceremony.

Tokyo’s Opening Ceremony will consist of plenty of pageantry and live performances that put Japan on full display, including the classic raising of the host nation’s flag and singing of the national anthem. The event will also feature the Parade of Nations, where thousands of Olympians will march for their country. Then, the torch relay will reach its final destination after an epic 121-day journey through Japan.
