      Movie Info

The true story of Molly Bloom, a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led people to believe.

Extraordinarily compelling, Molly's Game is a fascinating biopic about an Olympic-class skater turned gaming entrepreneur. The film follows the life of Molly Bloom who fell out of competitive skiing after a debilitating injury and moved to LA where she got involved with underground poker and eventually struck out on her own and started running her own games until they were raided by the FBI. Jessica Chastain gives an excellent performance and is backed by a strong supporting cast, including Idris Elba and Kevin Costner. And writer/director Aaron Sorkin does a good job at explaining the inner workings of underground poker. Additionally, the flashback narrative structure helps to keep the film moving and builds intrigue. Molly's Game is an incredibly captivating drama with an interesting story to tell and a positive message about standing up for ones principles.

The first five minutes, giving you Molly's sports background, are utterly fantastic. They set a pace the movie somehow keeps up, although the rest of the story contains mostly people talking. But the editing is so breathless and the writing so on point that it sometimes feel like an action film, going back and forth. The actors are top notch, especially Chastain and Elba, the camera work has a few trick up its sleeves too. For a topic that does not sound particularly exciting on paper, the result is an incredibly engaging and ultimately even moving film.

Features Sorkin at his very best (enjoyable quip filled dialogue that propels the plot forward) and his absolute worst (the main character comes to understand herself because a man explains her to her). Chastain is the glue that kinda makes it all work even if it is problematic at times.
