What anime do I show for film night?

So a bit of context, I’m the president of my local anime club, and I’m gonna host an anime film night in a couple of weeks. I’ve also realised I have no idea how to choose an anime movie that is both enjoyable for veteran weebs, and newcomers to the scene all the same.

My main demographic is mainly late-teen, but I expect a split of 7:3 boys to girls.

Please help!

Edit: I’m probably going to go with the girl who leapt through time, and Akira! Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

For starters, pick something that’s anime original and standalone (i.e. not a part of a film series or a continuation of an anime).

Your Name is pretty good for late teens. The only problem is that it’s a very popular film so people might get bored if they’ve watched it before.

Most of the studio ghibli films are nice and have a wide appeal.

If you’re looking for something more colorful and action heavy, Promare is a recent film that’s pretty good.

I think Maquia and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are pretty niche, but enjoyable. Wolf Children too.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time are pretty niche

It's literally the eighth most watched movie on MAL.

Yes👍

Redline maybe.

Yeah redline is pretty enjoyable for everyone, I've rewatched it many times.

Redline is great, but if you are going to show it to others: know there is a scene with uncensored nudity somewhere in the middle.

Lots of great suggestions already.

I'll add one more that some might find interesting: Sword of the Stranger

Akira, ghost in the shell or princess mononoke

All good👍

Summer Wars is a good, all-round anime movie.

This too👍

Dead Leaves or Tekkenkinkreet would be interesting picks. Where as movies like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Princess Mononoke are classics, there's a good chance a good portion of the audience will have already seen them. Well, if they're in an anime club they might have seen these too, but they're way down the MAL watched list so the chance is higher to pleasantly surprise someone.

I mean, it’s the premier event, so I’m really just trying to open people up to anime as an option

Grave of the Fireflies if you guys want to cry.

I'll suggest Penguin Highway - it's a recent one that is fun (and very weird), hasn't been seen by many people and is free of mature content.

Steamboy counts pretty sure.

You'll get good street cred with one of the Macross films. Macross Plus is probably my recommendation as a stand alone but DYRL is more iconic.

Mary & The Witches Flower

Okko's Inn

Tokyo Godfathers

Make a list and let them choose.
