Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe and Nutritious Genetically modified (GM) foods have taken over the traditional methods of farming by now being planted in over a quarter of the world’s farm land and it is essential that they are labeled for all consumers to see. These genetically modified foods have taken a toll on not only the environment, but human health as well. Stacy Malkan of California’s Right to Know Campaign said, “We absolutely have the right know if our sweet corn we are eating at our barbeque was genetically engineered in the lab,” (Eng). Genetically modified foods should be labeled due to their negative impacts on the environment and human health. Some argue that genetically modified crops benefit biodiversity and make the environment more sustainable; however, those against GM foods have found that these statements are false. Biotech companies and others that support GM food believe that engineering the food provides more crop diversity, increases crop yields in developing countries, and promotes tillage practices (Carpenter). In actuality, genetically engineered crops cause serious environmental damage. Pesticide use increases with GM crops because as more crops and insects become resistant to it, the more pesticide chemicals they have to spray. Monsanto, a biotech company, uses an herbicide called Roundup with their GE crops to stop weeds from growing. The effects of this herbicide include running off into wetlands, damaging soil, increasing plant diseases, and stopping plant nutrients (The Threats from Genetically Modified Food).
