Is The Secret Life of Pets 2 Appropriate for Young Children?

It has been a couple weeks since we screened The Secret Life of Pets 2 and now we’re finally 2 days way from it being released in theaters. The boys have been WAITING for this movie. They recorded reactions to every single trailer, RJ had them memorized before the movie came out and the first Secret Life of Pets is still on heavy rotation in our house. We pretty much have been containing our excitement for months, but alas we got to check it out in advance. So did the movie live up to the hype? Is The Secret Life of Pets 2 appropriate for younger children? I’m sharing all the details in this no-spoiler review.

Our family was hosted at an advanced screening of The Secret Life of Pets 2 courtesy of Universal Pictures. As always, all opinions expressed are my own.

What is The Secret Life of Pets 2 about?

Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt) is coping with some major life changes. His owner (Ellie Kemper) is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Max is so worried about protecting the boy that he develops a nervous tic. On a family trip to a farm, Max and mutt Duke (Eric Stonestreet) encounter canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a terrifying turkey, all of which only elevates Max’s anxiety. Luckily, Max gets some guidance from veteran farm dog Rooster (Harrison Ford, making his animated-film debut), who pushes Max to ditch his neuroses, find his inner alpha, and give Liam a little more freedom.

How long is The Secret Life of Pets 2?

The Secret Life of Pets 2 has a run time of 1 hour and 26 minutes. It is a fairly short movie and the story keeps you entertained the entire time. Younger children definitely shouldn’t have trouble sitting through the entire movie especially if they already love the franchise. Check out my post on surviving the movies with younger children if you find yourself needed tricks to get through it.

Is there any content in The Secret Life of Pets 2 I should worry about?

The Secret Life of Pets 2 is rated PG. I will say, the majority of this story line focused on Max who is very anxious now that Liam is around. I did notice his anxiety made RJ a little more nervous throughout the movie, he still loved it though. There was also a night scene at the carnival where he told me he was scared, but the fear passed quickly when Snowball and Daisy returned to the screen. Finally there was an unnecessary use of the word “pissed”. I didn’t see the point of cursing in a children’s movie. It just sounded weird and out of place.

Overall, we enjoyed The Secret Life of Pets 2. The wait was worth it and we can’t wait for it to come to home entertainment. Until then we’ll keep watching trailers, and singing along to the lyric video. If you plan on taking young children this film will definitely entertain. Content, length and storyline make this movie great for the entire family. I would say The Secret Life of Pets 2 is definitely appropriate for young children. Head to the movies with the littles and enjoy!

Will you be checking out The Secret Life of Pets 2 when it’s released this weekend? Who is your favorite character from the franchise?
