Val cenis

I will be in val cenis for 10 days with the family in August. Any tips and advice on top things to do?

We will be flying into MXP and driving to Val cenis. Any tips for the drive?

Any tips for the drive?

You can save on the Frejus tunnel fees (48€ each way) by going over the Mont Cenis pass. It's an easy enough drive, just much slower and prettier.

Note that the reduced-cost return tunnel fee (59.80€) is only valid for seven days so won't work for you, unless you're returning to visit the Italian side mid-way during your vacation.

Is it faster going with the tunnel?

#1 says the drive over the pass is 'much slower' so you can take it that the tunnel is indeed 'much faster'

The comparison depends where you're going. According to Viamichelin, Susa to Modane is 45 minutes through the tunnel, and 1h 12 over the Mont Cenis pass. While Susa to Lanslebourg is 43 minutes through the tunnel and 46 minutes over the top.

Viamichelin may underestimate the time over the top, as it's not always accurate on mountain roads. I've never timed myself, so do not know.

Although I have generally found ViaMichelin to be very realistic in terms of its journey time estimates (which, of course, exclude time lost to stops or traffic delays) and certainly much more realistic than Google Maps, I too have found consistently that ViaMichelin underestimates the time taken to traverse mountain roads - and it isn't as if I am unused to negotiating them.
