Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province… the crucial ancient destination for many tourists around the country and the world. A city that prides itself from the West Lake to the Qiantang River. Everything in Hangzhou is a spectacle to those who make the journey here. Landmarks stride around the city for people to see. Unique architectures from different walks of life are hallmarked here, including the Golden Sphered building that contains the InterContinental Hangzhou Hotel.

The InterContinental Hangzhou Hotel is familiar to me, it is the second time I’m ever writing about the hotel known for its architecture. I was the Platinum InterContinental Ambassador Member when I made my last stay at this hotel. To stay the least it was pretty disappointing in terms of issues with the maintenance of my stay. I booked two twin rooms last time, now I have chosen to come back for one night in one room with my family as the Diamond Ambassador Member. I wanted to give this hotel another chance, and see if there were any improvements to my stay. This is a comprehensive review and breakdown of my stay.

I came to the hotel with my mother and father from August 13th to the 14th on a prime-time weekend night. We have booked the Classic King Room which needed a rollaway bed for me as a family of 3. A day before my arrival came to a call from the Guest Services Manager Monica Lin. Monica wanted to confirm my arrival and stay preferences. There were some complications in communicating a need for a rollaway bed because there was an extra fee on top of the third-person fee. However, that was solved via WeChat. This allowed me to enhance my stay by communicating prior issues during the first stay. I referred to her my first review, and kindly requested Club InterContinental Access and a possible suite upgrade when possible. I was granted first the Club Access but was only offered the King Club River View Room at first. I was told by Monica that someone will check up on the room first to make sure it is up to cleanliness and standard before we entered the room.

Going around places Hangzhou was one thing, doing it in the hot 40-degree sun was another. After vigorous checks in Hangzhou East Station where air conditioning was lacking, we wanted to come to the hotel early for a 10:30 AM arrival. Upon arrival at the Golden Sphere, much of the Lobby Concierge Team escorted us to the lobby. Making sure our arrival was smooth for everyone, and safe under strict COVID-19 spread prevention procedures. Everyone at the concierge was friendly and attentive from the Chief Concierge Manager to the people who welcomed us in and out. Here are a few name mentions who made this happen smoothly: Gary, Yuki, Alex, Samu, Krystal, and many others whom I couldn’t note down at the time. Some of those mentioned were the elevator attendants, some were the luggage handlers, and others were the doormen. Everyone on the first floor did a splendid job.

After an elevator ride to the 5th-floor front desk lobby, we walked into the familiar dome of the hotel. I can still remember the surroundings of the interior like it was last year. The elevators, the rings of hallways, the sky windows. It has all come back to me. Waiting at the Ambassador Check-In Area was Monica. She welcomed me and my family to the hotel and had us seated in the small lounge, whilst I handled the check-in. Everything was much smoother than last time. What I thought was going to be a 21-minute check-in was 7 minutes and 23 seconds. A very speedy check-in was done by Monica and the Ambassador front desk team. I made sure Monica had someone check the room before we entered our room. Monica then escorted us to the elevator, where we made our way to King River View Club Room 1282. Monica said she was going to bring some Longjing Tea up for us, but first a description of the room. An additional Chinese traditional tea set was provided with Flower Tea and Longing Tea

This club room is 65SQM with a wide comfortable king bed and a view of the Qiantang river. It has a day bed; bedside desks with USB and power ports, lamps, and switches; a desk space, a bathroom with two walkways and one door, a separate bathtub and shower, a closet room, and a small hallway. The shower and soap amenities are my favorites as it is the Byredo Brand, which is the standard luxury soap brand that the InterContinental brand mostly uses nowadays. There were unfortunately issues that are already seen on the carpet. Already waiting for us was our fruit plate and a bottle of wine. The carpet was not vacuumed well, as I found small rice grains, bits of plastic, and other debris that was found on the carpet.

Monica came back in with a staff member to deliver the tea and to check in on us. I pointed out the issues with the cleanliness of the carpet and an issue with the closet door. Initially, we didn’t want to change rooms and wanted the carpet to be vacuumed again, I wasn’t satisfied with the privacy of the bathroom. We could hear those in the bathroom using the toilet because of the exposed hallway to the bathroom. Only a glass door was blocking the toilet. I should note it is different in the twin rooms, where there’s only one bathroom door. Those booking the twin rooms shouldn’t be worried about this issue. Monica took the issues in like a service champion, she offered a room change. We later accepted the room change after disliking the bathroom layout design.

Given that we have the Club InterContinental Access, we were there to enjoy the views, the service, and the catering provided. The Club InterContinental Lounge is located on the 16th floor of this Golden Sphere, which is run by the delightful Club InterContinental Manager Jennifer Yao. In this Lounge are a bunch of variety of dining and lounge seating, a meeting room, work stations, a minibar, the buffet, and the reception desk area. Outside is a view of the Qiantang River. On a good day, you can see the tide, and on lucky days in the evening, you can see the super moon! You can either have breakfast in the Club Lounge or the Fresh All-Day Dining Restaurant.

We did not use the club lounge for breakfast, but we did stay for both afternoon tea and happy hour. Afternoon tea consisted of the British Style Tea Set with cakes, fruit, sandwiches, and other nice bites. Happy Hour consisted of a Mini-Dinner Buffet which is best for light snacks, and not fit for a complex meal. The simplistic options in the Happy Hour are rather inadequate compared to many other Club InterContinentals with complex, diverse, and generous Happy Hour options, so until there are improvements, it is not advised to rely too much on it. Might I say this is one of the most attentive and directly efficient Club InterContinental staff we have come upon. Carrie, Livia, and Alaina were all great at their work in the lounge. Thea the Club InterContinental Supervisor was rather attentive and knowledgeable in terms of the club lounge department, despite the 1 month of service she served with the hotel. Professional and Friendly, she’s got a future in the lounge. Jennifer was very attentive, friendly, and hospitable. She makes a great club lounge manager. The lobby lounge bar run by Christina is also a nice place to relax and enjoy the architecture whilst enjoying a nice drink. We just got our drinks to-go, but well done to her on trying to communicate in English.

Sitting in the club lounge familiarizing myself with the lounge after discovering the problems with my room, Monica came up to me personally to let me inspect the replacement suite: The 1 King Bedroom Suite. Monica oversaw my inspection of the suite’s cleanliness before I accepted the new accommodation. Besides the fingernail clipping found on the carpet, I was a step closer to being satisfied in terms of the bathroom layout. Therefore whilst we left the hotel for lunch, the suite was cleaned again. Then Monica helped move us to the next suite.

The 130SQM suite (1275) is twice the size of the club room. In addition to the club room features, you have a bigger closet, a separate living room for guests and a place for an extra bed, a round table, two lockable toilet rooms, and a larger hallway that splits between the bedroom and living room. The rollaway bed however was quite rough for me as it is short and only one pillow was provided. The metal bar that helps the housekeepers set up the rollaway bed is at the edge of the pillow end of the bed. As a tall person, it’s hard to maneuver around the small bed to get sleep without hitting your head multiple times on that metal bar. The small pillow only given to me was not enough to protect my head. I asked the housekeeper for another pillow but was not given one. The rollaway bed was simply not comfortable and it was hard to sleep in that bed without cold feet or a couple of hits on the head. Overall, the suite is still quite worn out, even to the point that some of the electrical features like one of the USB ports were broken. The bathroom could still use a door between itself and the bedroom. Though the suite is quite nice based on space, view, and other uncompromising features of the suite.

Breakfast was, to say the least, could use some room for improvements. We had a nice table directly under the sunroof of the Golden Sphere. The food was fine. I had an omelet, some Chinese and Western dishes, fruit, juices, and some bakery. I was dissatisfied with the wonton soup, as they precook the wontons and leave them before adding the soup into the wontons. The wontons were stuck together whilst steaming away after boiling, and without adding the soup the wontons couldn’t separate from one another. Either way, the service was excellent and it wouldn’t have been done smoothly without the servers Nancy, Alia, and Violet.

The pool although busy was adequate for me, though if you want to make laps around the pool it is wise to choose another gym instead. The pool is curved and with children causing traffic to the pool, I don’t think it’s wise to exercise there unless there are no children. It’s small, but naturally that way because of the overall architectural design.
The checkout was unfortunately not as we expected, as Monica arranged for us to meet the Duty Manager Xu Ke. I wish I met him in person before I left. Perhaps the front desk agent who checked us out should have at least looked us up on the system and flagged him down. The ambassador desk was busy at the time, so we used the regular desk. Either way, just taking our key and not asking us about our stay is a little disappointing to end the stay. Feedback is important, I think every guest checking out should give feedback about one’s stay at checkout.

Xu Ke did call me and took in all the complaints I had for him directly. I think he has done a good job registering my complaints. General Manager Frankson Lee if you’re watching this review, I’m sure Xu Ke has addressed my issues directly to senior management. I’m sure you by then have received my comprehensive advice given via Monica and Xu Ke. I look forward to seeing my advice come to the hotel’s fruitful advantage.

Let’s talk about Monica for about 100 words. The Guest Services Manager Monica has been very vigilant during our stay in terms of trying to provide us a perfect stay as much as she could do in her power. I have to say that she is incredibly kind, patient, and professional in her line of duties in her role at this hotel. She has been mentioned quite a lot in the Ctrip reviews, and I think based on my experience with the hotel brand, she is the best Guest Services Manager I have had a service experience with of all the 25 InterContinental hotels I have been to. I don’t think anyone else would have salvaged much of our perceived experiences against the problem that has occurred except for Monica. It is her that I caused this review to still be exceptional based on my experience so far. Huge thanks to Monica Lin for her diligent service.

Overall this was a pretty rough stay, but still salvageable for a good review. Last year I have rated this hotel 4/5 on the first TripAdvisor review. This time it is still going to be 4/5. This was not a disappointing stay, but it was not a perfect stay. We are impressed by what the hotel has done to accommodate us. We would come back to this hotel again if we choose to come back to Hangzhou again. I have designed a ranking list for this hotel based on the 25 hotels I have visited. Previously the hotel before this stay was ranked #21 out of 25. Now I have given the hotel a boost to #16. The breakfast buffet on the other hand would be ranked at #11 out of 16 Chinese InterContinental Hotels. It was the second worst before this stay.

This hotel has improved by a couple of steps since my first stay. It has a lot more to cover in terms of improvements in the future, including housekeeping improvements, catering, maintenance, and modernization. I look forward to an improved experience when I return one day…

First visit to Hangzhou with hubs and child.

Large room with plenty of room for extra bed. Spacious bathroom with tub with large lounge area to relax.

Not the most vegetarian friendly hotel. Vegetarian food offering during breakfast or buffet dinner was very limited. However they do have a signage for for vegetarians to request/inform for more food.

Most enjoyable is the service. We had top
Notch customer service at the member area; from offering ginger tea to us for our flu to our train tickets booking. Well done to Miranda and teammates!

This is the second time I have stayed in an Intercontinental hotel and I can absolutely say I was not disappointed at all!
I was visiting Hangzhou for business purposes, but as a first time visitor to China I decided to extend my stay by a few days and I am so glad I did (and that I decided to stay in the same hotel)
The staff here are absolutely amazing, so warm, friendly and welcoming and they will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable here!
Their facilities are amazing - from a business perspective the function rooms are both functional and stunning to look at! For leisure, the pool and the gym are just what was needed at the end of a long day and I wish I had more time to make use of them properly.
I managed to sample all the restaurants and was impressed by each and every one of them. The food provided for our business meetings as well was absolutely exceptional and allowed us to try a variety of food, all of which was absolutely delicious! For anyone who enjoys a cocktail after work, I can thoroughly recommend the lychee martini which was one of the best I've ever had!
Finally, I want to give a quick shout out to Andy, whose smile will brighten up anyone's day, no matter how it's gone! But to be honest, all of the staff warrant a special mention because all of them were so wonderful!
I really, really do hope I will be back at one point in the future - thank you to the entire team for your 5* service from start to finish.

Incredible from the outside, the golden ball is an impressive structure. The main inside area was lovely, a grand space where you can't help but look up! Staff were all welcoming and helpful, especially in the bar where they make a good cup of coffee! The room however was slightly dated and in need of modernising to make it a 5* in comparison to other hotels of this standard. The view out was undeniably impressive, but the label right in the centre about window cleaning seemed oddly placed! I would return to this hotel potentially, but there are others close by which have a higher standard of room for a similar price.

Used to stay at this hotel quite a bit when it opened and haven’t been back for a while. I was happy to find out that the staff at IHG Rewards desk were very friendly. They upgraded to a suite and that’s a big deal because the suites at this property are quite big. Zoey and Donna were friendly and professional. Overall, a great stay!

the hotel is impressive and when you enter the immense lobby you think you are in a Space Odyssey kind of movie. The rooms are incredibly big and they have panoramic glass from floor to ceiling offering you an unobstructed view fo the world outside. The fantastic aspects of the hotel do no stop here. They offer sumptuous buffets for breakfast and dinner with all the kind of food specialities you may think of. They have also a very well equipped gym with state of the art equipment. However, the hotel features and magnificence are also supported by great and highly satisfactory hotel service standards delivered by well groomed and trained hotel staff. The room service many must be tried you will be surprised by the speed and quality of the food. If you consider the overall experience you get from staying here then you will think that the hotel room rate comes cheeap after all. I would suggest anyone to try this hotel

There is help with transport at the airport and they speak English of a sort. If you have the hotel name written down in English and do a google translate to Chinese that should be sufficient to pass to a taxi driver anyway. Its quite a way from the airport I seem to remember - about 40 minutes by car.
