If you're not able to reset your password this way, visit this page on your desktop or mobile browser to secure your account.

If you forget or don’t know your Instagram username, you can still log in using your phone number or email address associated with your account. Once you log in, you’ll be able to find your username at the top of your profile. You can also learn what to do if you’ve lost access to the email or phone number you used to sign up for Instagram.

If you think your username was changed as a result of your account being hacked:

  • Check if you've received an email from Instagram notifying you that your account information was changed.
  • Ask a friend to visit your profile and take a screenshot of your current username.

You'll no longer be able to add Instagram accounts to a single login.

Existing accounts with a single login

If you already have a single Instagram login for multiple accounts, then you can still use that login for those accounts.

Each of your accounts on a single login will also keep their individual passwords. You can still use those individual passwords to login to each individual account.

Additional accounts

Any additional accounts not already added to your single Instagram login will require separate login information.

Removing accounts

If you remove an account from your single login, or if you change the password on an individual account associated with that single login, then you won’t be able to add it back.

You can login to that account with its individual password.

If you can't remember the password to your Instagram account, then you can request a password reset email.

If password reset isn't working

  • You can request a new password reset email. The previous email may have expired.
  • Make sure you choose to reset your password by selecting reset your Instagram password in the email.
    • Note: Do not choose to login from the email.
  • If you're trying to change your password because you think your Instagram account has been hacked, learn more about getting help with logging in.

If you think your account has been hacked or taken over, there are several actions you may be able to take via the website or the app to secure your account. If someone gains access to your account or you're unable to log in, visit this page on your desktop or mobile browser to secure your account.

You can also try the recovery steps below. Some of these recovery steps may not be available to you depending on the type of account you're trying to recover, but we recommend trying them all.

Check your email account for a message from Instagram

If you received an email from security@mail.instagram.com letting you know that your email address was changed, you may be able to undo this change by selecting secure my account in that message. If additional information was also changed (example: your password), and you're unable to change back your email address, request a login link or security code from Instagram

Request a login link from Instagram

To help us confirm that you own the account, you can request that we send a login link to your email address or phone number.

To request a login link:

  1. On the login screen, tap Get help logging in..
  2. Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then click Send login link. Note: If you don’t have access to the username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, visit this page and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Complete the captcha to confirm that you are a real human, then click Next.
  4. Click the login link in your email or a text message (SMS) and follow the on-screen instructions.

Request a security code or support from Instagram

If you're unable to recover your account with the login link we sent to you, you may be able to request support from us on a mobile device.

To request support from Instagram:

Be sure to enter a secure email address that only you can access. Once you've submitted your request, you should receive an email from Instagram with next steps.

Verify your identity

If you submitted a support request for an account without photos of you, you should receive an auto-response email from the Support Team at Meta. We’ll ask you to help us verify your identity by providing the email address or phone number you signed up with and the type of device you used at the time of sign up (example: iPhone, Android, iPad, other).

If you request support for an account with photos of you, you'll be asked to take a video selfie of you turning your head in different directions to help us check that you’re a real person and confirm your identity.

Once you submit the video selfie to help us verify your identity, you’ll receive an email from Instagram at the secure email address you provided. We use this video to ensure you are a real person and that you are who you say you are.

Keep in mind that the video you submit will never be visible on Instagram and will be deleted within 30 days.

If we weren’t able to confirm your identity from the video you submitted, you can submit a new video and we’ll review it again.

Note: Instagram doesn’t use facial recognition, and we don't use it in video selfies. We use video selfies to ensure you are a real person and may confirm with human review that you are authorized to access your account.

If you're still able to log into your Instagram account

If you think your account has been hacked or an attempt to hack your account has been made and you're still able to log in, there are things you can do to help keep your account secure:

If you're still having trouble accessing your account, we'd like to hear more about your experience so we can continue to improve our support options.

Email Troubleshooting

If the email listed in your Instagram profile has changed, we'll send two emails asking you to accept or reverse the request. To make sure the request came from you, one email is sent to the original email to deny the change and one is sent to the new email address to allow the change.

If you made the request to change your Instagram profile email:

You'll need to accept the request from your new email account listed in your Instagram profile. This helps us confirm that you have access to the email you're requesting to associate with your Instagram account. We'll also send an email to the original email account listed in your Instagram profile allowing you to reverse the request if it was not requested by you.

If you did not make the request to change your Instagram profile email:

You'll need to deny the request from the original email associated with your Instagram account. The email will come from security@mail.instagram.com with a special link you can click to reverse the email change and help secure your account.

Keep in mind that we only initiate this process after an email is changed from the Instagram Profile page and that we won't change your Instagram email without your permission.

If you're having trouble accessing your original Instagram account email, learn what you can do.

If your email address can't be found when trying to reset your password, you may have registered with a different email or mistyped your email when you first signed up.

If you're having this issue, try the following:

On an Android:

  1. Tap Get help logging in on the login screen.
  2. Enter your Instagram username, email or phone number, then tap Next.

On an iPhone:

  1. Tap Forgot password on the login screen.
  2. Enter your Instagram username or phone number, then tap Send login link.

If you've previously linked your Instagram and Facebook accounts, you can reset your password using your Facebook account by tapping Reset using Facebook.

Unfortunately, if you can't access the email account you registered with and didn't link your Instagram and Facebook accounts, we're unable to give you access to the account.

Why you might not have received the email:

If you're not receiving the password reset email, it might be because:

  • It's going into your spam folder
  • You accidentally mistyped your email when you first signed up for Instagram
    • Note: If you mistyped your email address when signing up for your account, then we're not able to give you access to this account.

Ways you might find the email:

  • Check your spam folder.
  • If your Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked, then you can Reset your password through Facebook verification.
  • Reach out to your email service provider to make sure you're able to get emails from the @instagram.com domain.

If you think someone has gained access to your account or you're unable to log in, visit this page on your desktop or mobile browser to secure your account.

If you lost access to the email or phone number you used to sign up for Instagram, you can either try to regain access to the email or phone number or you can update your profile with new account information.

Unfortunately, if you can't access the email account you registered with and didn't link your Instagram and Facebook accounts, we're unable to give you access to the account.

Try to regain access to your email account

If you've lost access to your email account, you can try to ask your email provider to help you regain access to it. Many email providers offer a way to recover access to your account if you ever forget your password or if the account is hacked.

When you try to log in to your email provider, there may be an option like forget your password? or trouble signing in? that will allow you to contact them or complete a request for additional support. You may need to provide them with a phone number, answers to security questions, or other information to verify your access request. Instagram can't provide any assistance with helping you get back into your email account.

Change your Instagram account email or phone number

If you can't regain access to the email or phone number you used to sign up for Instagram, you'll need to log into Instagram and change the email or phone number on your profile with a new email account that you can access. This is necessary to ensure you can continue to access Instagram and to ensure someone else can't gain access to your Instagram account with an email or phone number you no longer use.

Note: Before you begin, make sure you can already access Instagram either with your email, phone number or by logging in with Facebook. If you can't access Instagram and reach your Instagram profile settings, you won't be able to continue.

Once you're logged into Instagram, you can learn how to change your email from your Instagram profile. If you signed up for Instagram with your Facebook account, your email will be the same as the one associated with your Facebook account. If you didn't sign up for Facebook or Instagram with a phone number, then there will not be an email associated with your account, but you can add one if you want.

After you've changed your Instagram email, both the original email and new email will receive requests to confirm or deny the change.

If you're receiving a password reset email for the wrong account, it's likely that the account you're trying to log into was registered with a different email address.

To regain access to the right account, try any additional email addresses you may have used. If you've previously linked your Instagram and Facebook accounts, you can reset your password using your Facebook account by tapping Reset using Facebook.

If you think someone has gained access to your account or you're unable to log in, visit this page on your desktop or mobile browser to secure your account.

Confirming Your Identity

There are several reasons you may be asked to send in a copy of your ID to Instagram:

  • To confirm that the account you're trying to access belongs to you.
  • To confirm or edit your age.
  • To process payments.
  • To help prevent abuse such as scams or phishing.

If you're not sure what type of IDs Instagram can use to confirm your identity, please review our ID list. To upload your ID to Instagram, follow the on-screen instructions. In most cases, you’ll have at least two attempts to submit an ID.

During the review process you may temporarily lose access to your account. If you choose not to confirm your identity, your content may receive reduced distribution or you may not be able to log back into your account. In some cases, if you do not pass our review, you’ll be notified in the Instagram app that we may disable your account and delete your account data.

Keep in mind, we won’t make your ID visible to others on Instagram.

If you’re having trouble logging into an Instagram account with photos of you, you may be asked to upload a video selfie to confirm you are who are say you are and that you’re a real person. Instagram uses video selfies to confirm your identity because photos and IDs can be digitally modified. By using a video selfie that asks you to turn your head in different directions, we know you’re a real person. Video selfies help us prevent fake IDs and other abuses.

The review process may take up to two business days, and while we review your video selfie, you will not have access to your account until we confirm it’s you. If you pass our review, you’ll receive an email from Instagram at the secure email address you provided and will receive a link to reset your password.

If you do not pass our review, you’ll receive an email from Instagram at the secure email address you provided and you may be able to resubmit your video selfie in the Instagram app.

If you choose not to confirm your identity with a video selfie, you may not be able to log back into your account.

Keep in mind that the video you submit will never be visible on Instagram and will be deleted within 30 days.

Note: Instagram doesn’t use facial recognition, and we don't use it in video selfies. We use video selfies to ensure you are a real person and may confirm with human review that you are authorized to access your account.

Disabled Account

If your Instagram account was disabled, you’ll see a message telling you when you try to log in. Accounts that don't follow our Community Guidelines may be disabled.

If you think your account was disabled by mistake, you may be able to ask us to review the decision by opening the app, entering your username and password and following the on-screen instructions.

If you don’t see a disabled message, you may be experiencing a login issue. If your account was deleted by you or someone with your password, there's no way to restore it. You can create a new account with the same email address you used before, but you may not be able to get the same username.

If someone gained access to your account or you're unable to log in to your account, visit this page on your desktop or mobile browser to secure your account.
