"These tests with Vicky were the first time that we ever shot her on film, and it reminded me of a great documentary called Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words..."
—Paul Thomas Anderson talking about Vicky Krieps in Phantom Thread, and killing me instantly by merging all my niche interests into one sentence.
"He filmed me. Now I film the world."
I cried about twenty times over the course of this! It's so spectacularly well-made (the Michael Nyman score...I didn't ask for that) and filled with amazing home footage, but what touched me most was the letters and diary entries. I can't articulate how surreal it is to hear someone who you admire so much (and practically worship in the way that is so easy to do when it comes to iconic movie stars) communicate thoughts that are almost identical to ones that you have had yourself. It creates a sort of connection that I rarely find with people I don't know personally, and I'm so thankful for the chance to get a glimpse into Ingrid's interior life
This was so raw, vulnerable, honest, and beautiful. Ingrid Bergman had always been frank and candid about her life, and very unapologetic. She lived the life she wanted with no regrets and not a single f*ck given to what other people think. She was determined and passionate. Sure she had flaws, she knew it and she embraced it. That’s what I love about her so much.
I love how she documented every single thing of her life, to be able to hear her own words throughout so many stages of her life was incredible. Seeing these footages of home-videos, letters, films, interviews, only makes me admire her even more because it shows just how real she was.
Happy Birthday, Ingrid Bergman ❤️
“i always have my camera with me. i love to film. i got that from dad. he filmed me. now i film the world.”
such an intimate look into such a fascinating woman. something i found so heartwarming was that her eldest daughter was confused as to why her mother never wanted to live with her children, believing that ingrid loved her work more than anything, even them. and then, after she died, when they went through her letters thinking they would just be about her work, they found that she wrote about her children more than anything else.
Last night, a man at the table said to me,
"You'll never be an actress.
You're too tall."
I said to myself,
"He knows nothing about me."
Ingrid ♥️
Ingrid Bergman was the most gracious actress and hearing Alicia Vikander narrate such intimate moments from her letters was a divine experience
“In ten minutes it will be 11:30 pm. All the candles are burning. Everything is so beautiful. I feel sad. I want to write everything down that happened to me in 1929. I didn’t do well in school. Failed three subjects. Dad fell sick. I traveled alone to my aunt in Germany. And Dad died. My friend Maude died. Grandpa died. Uncle Amandus, Aunt Jenny and a cousin died in an accident. That’s all I remember. All I wish for now is a happier new year. What will the new year bring?”
on god i would die for this woman with zero hesitation and nothing would ever stop me
(also roberto rossellini jr. can like,,, get it)

it's too bad I couldn't see most of the film (people in front of me were blocking the screen) because I really love Ingrid and was looking forward to watching this documentary. if anyone knows where to find this please let me know!
It’s been a while so I thought I’d remind you all that I am an Ingrid Bergman stan first and human being last.
