This is a very fine film that creeps into you over time, and if you're anything like me, you'll want to watch it again to luxuriate in the wonderful artful details--cinematography, costuming, and the musical score. Much has been said about the centerpiece scene between Tracy Lett's Dean Caudwell and Logan Lerman's Marcus Messner, and all the praise is warranted. Whoa! The emotion it generates from me is identical to the emotions I had when I read Roth's novel. Amazing. And since I've already mentioned Lerman and Letts, let me just say that all of the acting performances are stellar. Sarah Gadon and Linda Emond are particularly brilliant. The conversation Linda Emond's character has with Lerman's gave me chills. Finally, I have to admit to having a watchful eye on Lerman's career, and I was quite pleased with the calm rage he brought to his character here. He's a heartthrob who has made an active decision to find challenging roles worthy of his talent. Kudos to him! Kudos to James Schamus! I definitely recommend.

Stunningly cinematic from beginning to end. Having read Philip Roth books before and having seen the movie "The Ice Storm" previously, I had a better background knowledge of what to expect creatively than I think of some of the other reviewers who may have not recognized all the complexity and innuendo surrounding the film. Much like "Dr. Zhivago", the love story plot highlights and masterfully reveals many layers of social commentary. The two main characters are beholden to submit to forces and structures much more established and powerful than they are, and thus, both end up betrayed by those decisions made on their behalf in accordance to the prevailing order of the day. Like all good art, the ideas conveyed about human nature, good and evil, and the extent of free will within a context extend far beyond the time and place depicted in the setting. The acting and direction left nothing more to be desired... fantastic!

This movie was for me very relatable. At many points I laughed and reminisced about my own childhood (the relationship between Marcus and his parents is extremely accurate, any Jewish son can identify with it).

The thing about this movie is it seems to only scratch the surface of it's greater potential. It's as if the production team and actors went to a beach in the Caribbean but only put their toes in the water. The screenwriting seems to go back and forth between the emotional unrest of Lerman's character and his love Olivia. But that unrest is shrouded by vagueness and I never knew which character to focus on. I imagine the writer and director intend for me to focus on the relationship between the two of them, but that doesn't develop enough as it should. However, it is the highlight of the film and it does make up for some of the dullness.

What I found to be a very noticeable disappointment was the fact that the first encounter between Marcus and Olivia was never shown. This is suppose to be the early climax of every romance film but it seems the writer didn't have any good ideas. Marcus wants to ask Olivia out and yet we never see him actually do it. Without giving too much away, the ending makes a very similar mistake.

Overall though it was a good film. I wasn't disappointed but it certainly could have been more.

My husband and I both loved this movie. We are big Philip Roth fans. Set in 1951 during the Korean War, the film did a great job with the sets and wardrobe. The soundtrack added a lot of drama.. My favorite scene was when the Marcus the main character, a Jewish kid from Newark attending a small Christian College in Ohio, is invasively interviewed by the Dean. If you loved "Portnoy's Complaint" this is sure to please as well. This movie was in the theatres very shortly last summer, and we missed it, so we were happy to see that it was on Amazon.

Je suis de plus en plus convaincu (sauf à ce que l'on me prouve le contraire) que, vu le talent des cinéastes, vu aussi le snobisme bêtifiant mêlé de mercantilisme et de politiquement correct qui régit désormais le monde de l’audio-visuel comme l’ensemble de notre société, je suis donc de plus en plus persuadé qu'au vu de tout cela, ça n'est plus la peine de rechercher une adaptation cinématographique digne de ce nom. Bien souvent, j’assiste, ici et là, à un massacre pur et simple de l’œuvre originale... Cette mode tournant autour d’adaptations d’œuvres littéraires m’est franchement incompréhensible (même mode avec le « biopic », dit en passant), et ce depuis une bonne vingtaine d'années, même s'il y a quelques contre-exemples et de véritables réussites – que l'on songe à Coup de Torchon de Bertrand Tavernier (superbe adaptation de 1280 âmes de Jim Thompson), Gens de Dublin de John Huston (adapté d’une nouvelle de James Joyce, The Dead), L.A. Confidential de Curtis Hanson (titre éponyme d’un roman de James Ellroy), Barry Lyndon de Kubrick (le roman de Thackeray), Mystic River de Clint Eastwood (superbement adapté du roman de Dennis Lehanne), Les Diaboliques de H-G. Cluzot (D’entre les morts de Boileau-Narcejac), Oliver Twist de David Lean (je ne parlerai pas de celle de Roman Polanski, complètement ratée, par contre son Tess D’Ubervilles adapté du roman de Thomas Hardy est une franche réussite), Sa Majesté les Mouches de Peter Brook (adapté du roman de William Golding) etc., etc., etc. bref, les bons exemples, il y en a… Mais je les trouve bien rares, aujourd’hui, les qualités dans les films précités. Pourquoi ne pas alors faire un film « librement inspiré de »... Pour Crimes et Châtiments, le superbe roman de Dostoïevski, et à l’inverse du Crimes et Châtiments de George Lampin, Woody Allen a remporté ce pari à deux reprises, deux libres adaptations avec deux résultats fascinants : d’abord avec Crimes et Délits puis avec Match Point , deux leçons de cinéma et deux réussites en termes de mise en scène (1).

Malheureusement, pour Indignation (2016) de James Schamus, voici l'exemple même d'une très mauvaise mise en scène et d'une exécrable adaptation à partir d'une œuvre littéraire. Si je n’avais pas lu le roman de Philip Roth ( Indignation ), ça n'aurait rien changé. D’autre part, les cinéastes et les producteurs ne comprennent absolument pas que « ça » n'est pas le fait d'être « fidèle » au roman qui compte (à la rigueur, à l'esprit du roman, oui), mais que l'intérêt est de partir d'une faille, d'un déséquilibre du récit ou du script. Prendre un point x, y ou z et à partir de ce point de rupture, à partir de cette faille béante, construire son scénario pour harmoniser le tout à la fin (ou pas, d’ailleurs...). Représenter aussi l'espace avec suffisamment de talent… Trouver le geste juste, le regard juste, mon dieu comme c'est devenu rare sur nos grands écrans. Heureusement, nos amis asiatiques semblent relever le défi avec talent. Je pense à quelques cinéastes coréens (ceux-là ne se sont jamais aussi bien portés depuis une dizaine d’années). Le cinéma turc et russe également. Bon, je reviendrai sur ce commentaire. Quoi que... Je ne sais pas si ça vaut le coup de perdre du temps et de vous en faire perdre tout autant, en vous faisant part de ma déception. Mais vous l'aurez compris, c'est un film que j'ai détesté, que j'ai trouvé rempli de défauts scénaristiques et esthétiques... Difficile le métier de cinéaste. Comme celui d'acteur. Comme celui de scénariste... Mais là, franchement : gros flop artistique. Massacre d'une œuvre (un bon roman, donc un bon scénario) et un film qui flingue le livre. A vouloir tout montrer, à vouloir tout exposer, le cinéma ne remplit pas sa « mission »... A ne proposer aucune variation sur un thème donné, à ne pas éclipser des passages que l’on n'est pas obligé de montrer, et on en arrive à ce genre de résultat calamiteux. Les cinéastes et même les cinéphiles pourraient quand même revoir quelques œuvres signées Orson Welles ou Joseph L. Mankiewicz , chez qui le récit et la dramaturgie étaient rendus possibles par des choix judicieux.

C’est donc l’histoire de Marcus Messner, jeune homme brillant qui sort à peine du lycée… Mais d'emblée, le jeune acteur ( Logan Lerman est d'une fadeur indicible), tiré à quatre épingles, dans cette Amérique des années 50, m'est apparu trop policé. Le cinéaste ( James Schamus ) et son chef opérateur (Andrew Marcus) ont astiqué la pellicule avec une tonne d'huile et de vernis... Ce scénario aurait pu être si bien exploité... Que nenni, tout est ratage et superficialité dans ce film projeté uniquement aux States. Même Sarah Gadon dans le rôle d'Olivia Hutton (une bipolaire nymphomane) ne fait pas flipper. Aucune émotion. Aucun ressenti. Et pourtant, ce film, je l'ai vu deux fois. Le travail, à vouloir être trop parfait, trop près du récit, n'en devient que gerbant. Comme lorsque Marcus, justement, se met à vomir devant le doyen (Tracy Letts). Les lecteurs et lectrices du roman savent de quoi il en retourne. Pour le reste, que dire ? Le portrait du père, à peine esquissé, est même caricatural. Aucune émotion sur ses craintes. Aucun rajout. Aucune réécriture, aucune imagination de la part du scénariste. On a là, de toute évidence, dans cette industrie du cinéma, des fondamentalistes, des gens qui prennent une œuvre au pied de la lettre et ne savent pas réécrire un scénario (à la différence des Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Fritz Lang, Raoul Walsh, Orson Welles, King Vidor et Joseph Losey). Ce n'est plus une œuvre d'art au final. Cela devient tout simplement un ersatz, une coquille vide. Un travail sans prise de risque. Sans moteur... Moi, je dis, CUT, coupez ! Il n'y a plus rien à faire, plus rien à voir. Triste, triste et surtout indigne, vraiment indigne. Je me demande même ce qu'en a pensé Philip Roth de son vivant, et s'il a vu le film. Je citais plus haut King Vidor qui, à la fin des années 40, avait adapté La Source Vive , le fameux bouquin d'Ayn Rand. Liberté totale. Au point de décevoir quelques lecteurs. En français, le titre est Le Rebelle , avec Gary Cooper. Et bien, voilà un bel exemple de ce que signifie adapter librement un roman, avec une mise en scène réussie... (2)

Geschichte:

Ein atheistischer jüdischer Metzgersohn sitzt an einem christlich geführten College
plötzlich zwischen allen Stühlen. Denn er wird nicht nur von seinen Zimmergenossen,
die ebenfalls jüdisch sind, geschnitten,.....sondern er gerät auch wegen eines für diese Zeit
ungewöhnlichen Dates mit einer Kommilitonin in die Schusslinie.

Als wären ihnen die Rollen auf den Leib geschrieben, ehrlich. So authentisch verkörpern
die beiden jungen Hauptdarsteller Lerman und Gadon ihre Parts- mit denen man lacht,
weint und fühlt. Es ist diese bezwingende Überzeugungskraft von Marcus, mit der er gegenüber
seinen Kollegen, seinen Eltern und seinem Direktor argumentiert.
Olivia und Marcus, beide sind Außenseiter. Und gewöhnliche Teenager, die nicht ins System passen,
in dem sie sich befinden. Und das Gespräch zwischen Marcus und Dekan Caudwell ist mit Sicherheit
das Herzstück des Films; über Fünfzehn Minuten belauern sich die Kontrahenten bei diesem wohltemperierten
Streit der Ideologen.
