‘Sensory overload’: Jake Paul describes Floyd Mayweather brawl after stealing his hat

Jake Paul figured he’d get a rise out of Floyd Mayweather. He just didn’t know his actions would set him off the way it did.

“I didn’t think he was gonna get that mad over a hat,” Paul said in an interview with Chael Sonnen.

Mayweather, though, did get that mad last week after Paul stole his cap at a media event in Miami ahead of Mayweather’s exhibition boxing match with Jake’s brother, Logan Paul, on June 6. In the middle of a tunnel walkway at Hard Rock Stadium, Jake Paul and Mayweather faced off with cameras and reporters surrounding them. They jawed at each other for less than a minute when, all of a sudden, Paul plucked the cap off Mayweather’s head and attempted to run away.

After that was pure pandemonium. Or, as Paul described it …

“It was sort of sensory overload with everything that was going on,” he said. “There was like eight guys around me, all grabbing me, some hitting me in the leg. I’m holding onto (Mayweather’s) hat; I was holding onto his hat for dear life. I was like, ‘No! I’m not letting go!’ That was the main thing that they were concerned about. They were like, ‘Give us the f*cking hat! Give the hat!’ And I was like, ‘Nooooooo!’ And then finally they got the hat.

“And then, yeah, I just see this angry Floyd Mayweather. I couldn’t believe it. One of his security guards had my shirt wrapped around his hand, and so I couldn’t get away. He just comes running at me, and he’s throwing punches over the security guard, and I’m literally just like, ‘Oh, wow, this is crazy.’ The funny thing about it was that none of the punches were even coming close to me, and he actually punched his own security guard in the side of the head. But, yeah, (it was an) absurd moment, hilarious.”

Logan Paul didn't seem to mind Jake Paul stealing his shine with Floyd Mayweather brawl

Paul’s stunt was the latest in a string of them that have shined a spotlight on the YouTuber-turned-professional boxer who is 3-0. On April 24, Paul, coming off a first-round TKO of Ben Askren one week earlier, attended UFC 261 in Jacksonville where he was confronted by Daniel Cormier, who felt provoked by Paul’s antics as he sat near him while calling the fights cageside.

Unlike the Mayweather incident, that one didn’t get out of hand. Even Paul admitted he got more than he bargained for this time.

“Hey, it’s show business,” said Paul, who got a “gotcha hat” tattoo on his leg to commemorate the Mayweather brawl. “I didn’t think it was gonna go that viral. I thought it was gonna be like, ‘This is funny, Jake Paul is an immature little kid’ – which, by the way, that’s what I was going for.

“I was (thinking) this is gonna be hilarious. I’m gonna be like a little kid stealing someone’s hat on the playground.”
