About
The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is a work of art conceived by the legendary artist and peace advocate Yoko Ono as a beacon to world peace. It is dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is located on Viðey Island in Kollafjörður and it's light is well visible from Reykjavík city and the capital area. Every year the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges an hour after sunset between 9 October (Lennon's day of birth) and 8 December (Lennon's demise). In addition the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges for one week on winter solstice, on New Year's Eve, for one week during spring equinox and few other selected dates. The ever changing weather conditions play an interesting part to the strength, intensity and brilliance of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER’S light. During it's lighting time guided tours are avaiable called the Imagine Peace Tour. The tour is dedicated to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER and Lennon’s and Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace. It is run by Elding with departures from Reykjavík's Old harbour. The tour unites history, art and nature is an interesting way.

This is Yoko Ono's 'art installation' and contribution to her late husband set on a tiny island across the capital. It's nothing but a huge light beam reaching the sky very high. You don't need to take a boat across to see it, but you can see it from all over Reykjavik. Another issue is light pollution and why Iceland approved this?

You do not need to be on the island to see and appreciate this, it is visible from the shoreline in Reykavik and also from considerable distance when doing Northern Lights tours.

Impressive visual power from a distance. Only switched on Oct-December.

Very special! Our tour started at 8pm with a 15min boat trip to the island. The uninhabited island is partially lit but torches are provide for the 10 miniute to the light tower. The tower is very impressive with ‘imagine peace in 24 languages around its sides. Six beams of light shine from the outside to mirrors with an extra three inside which shine some 12km into the air converging. The ‘tower’ is only approx. 2m high and is said to represent a wishing well and the light hope. It is only open for short periods during the year coinciding with their birthday, day of John’s death and between Christmas and new year. Iceland was chosen as its energy is all but geothermal, it straddles two tectonic plates and Iceland has no army. There was a second vantage point we walked to for photos and a church that we entered.

Was a great day! Sunshine and great views
My only regret is that I didn’t realize there were evening tours to watch the tower light up during the first week of spring - which also coincides with John and Yokos anniversary and Yokos birthday…

A giant column of light as visible in many locations across the globe e.g. the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas. Struggling to see how Yoko is an artist here, it’s just a straight beam from a light bulb…?
Happened to be illuminated due to their anniversary, but wouldn’t have missed it if it had not been on.

Why on Earth would this be allowed in Iceland? A place famed for its darkness? It is nothing more than a huge source of light pollution. I was hugely disappointed to see it when visiting, it totally ruined my experience of Iceland, a place I had visited on the grounds it is known to be so environmentally friendly. Light pollution causes issues for wildlife, I cannot see how this was given permission to be installed.

Recently viewed this monument from the nearby lighthouse.. I was unable to go at the Videy Island as the ferry service was closed.

Being a John Lennon fan, this monument was very important for me to see.

This is not so much a monument to peace as it is a self-congratulatory work of art for the Ono/Lennon family. (It is lit on their birthdays and on their wedding anniversary - how is that related to peace??) It is a tacky piece of light pollution that ruins the beautiful dark sky over Reykjavik.

I understand the intent of the Imagine Peace Tower but it's just another form of light pollution. We were fortunate to have about an hour of Aurora activity visible from our boat but the beam from the Imagine Peace Tower was visible in many of the pictures I took.
