He's been teasing us with hints at a Luther movie for a while now, but thankfully Idris Elba has finally put us out of our misery and confirmed that DCI John Luther will be hitting our screens once more as the hit BBC series will be made into a feature length film.

The popular crime drama finished its fifth series back in January 2019, culminating in a week-long event which aired all four episodes back-to-back.

Speaking to the press on Friday after receiving one of BAFTA's highest honours, the BAFTA Special Award at the Virgin Media BAFTA Television awards, Idris said: "I've maintained I'd like to see it come to a film, and that is where I think we are heading towards - a film. And I'm looking forward to making that happen. It is happening."

Another two hours of Idris' face on the big screen? Don't mind if we do.

"With film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John is always going to be John Luther," he continued.

This is the news we've been waiting for since the Hollywood actor discussed the idea of Luther movie with Sky News earlier this month, saying: "I've made it very clear that I'd like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther."

And that wasn't the first time he broached the idea either, telling LADBible back in 2018 that: "For me it would be nice to take Luther up a scale. Make the storyline bigger, make it slightly more international."

Created by Neil Cross, Luther first hit our screens in 2010 and to date Elba has won two Golden Globes and a Royal Television Society best actor award for his performance. The hit series also made a star of Ruth Wilson who played narcissistic murderer Alice Morgan, who shares a love-hate, cat-and-mouse relationship with John throughout the series.

The news comes as Idris led the winners at the TV BAFTAs 2020 on Friday night, with viewers noting 'more diversity' across the ceremony after the BAFTA Film Awards were criticised earlier this year.

The only question now is how much longer to we have to wait? We'll be bingeing all past five seasons in the meantime.
