I didn't know Helen, but how I wish I had. She always struck me as being grounded and was wise beyond her years. I was a huge admirer of her work and beauty, she was a very talented actress and her beauty shone through as did her wisdom. I loved how her husband described her as living fearlessly. I think we could all learn from how Helen and how she chose to live her life. May she rest in peace and my heartfelt condolences to her husband, family and friends. She will be missed by so many. I think that I first saw Helen in her role as Anna Karenina ages ago. She left an impression on me. And since I have tried to catch her TV performances.( Not able to do stage shows. ) What a strong, riveting actress with a marvellous voice. I shall miss her so much. What other terrific performances could she have given. I hope her family get lots of support & help in the coming months as they go through the phases of grief. A truly great loss!

Helen was my classmate in Tanzania in the 1970s at the International School of Tanganyika, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She was from Scotland (her father was a diplomat) and I from India (my father was on assignment with the Commonwealth Secretariat). I had joined the school halfway through the school year, and didn't know anyone in my 4th grade class. My one vivid memory of Helen from those days was from my very first day of school at IST. During Break Time (Recess), all of my classmates went running off to play with their own various groups of friends. I stood outside the classroom, feeling completely lost and alone. Then Helen walked up to me and said pleasantly, matter-of-factly and confidently, “My name is Helen, and you will be spending Break with me.” I looked at her shyly and uncertainly and said, “Okay.” Then she gave me a tour of the whole IST school campus, showing me where the gymnasium, swimming pool, music room, etc were. I felt so grateful for her kindness and I immediately felt comfortable and reassured in such a dauntingly different environment and culture. We never actually became close friends, but it helped to know that there were wonderful people like her in my class. If Helen has ever shared with anyone that there was a girl from India in her class who initially called all the teachers "Auntie", that girl was me! She left in 5th grade and returned to the UK, and I think we exchanged one letter and then completely lost touch, but I have always remembered her kindness to this day, and had even mentioned that incident to my husband and daughter as recently as a few years ago! Little did I know that Helen went on to become such a brilliant and accomplished actress! I realized that this was the same Helen as my IST classmate only after reading about her tragic death a few days ago. My deepest condolences to her family and all those who loved her. May her soul rest in peace. - Surekha

I have followed Helen's work for years. I've watched her film work and seen films of some of her plays screened in a theatre. I never met her but I could sense what a wonderful person she was. I've also followed her husband Damian Lewis' work and love his work also and felt he was also wonderful. I met him briefly after a staged reading in NYC. I loved seeing them as a couple. I send my deepest condolences to Damian, their two children and family and friends. So much love and appreciation is flowing to Helen. Thank you, Helen.

You are gone way too soon Helen. You have been an inspiration and a pillar of strength. I have been a great admirer of your work and the characters you brought so brilliantly to life. I never knew you, but somehow I feel I got a piece of your brilliance everytime I was privileged to see your work. No better Narcissa Malfoy could there ever have been, and Polly Gray, well I fell in love with your brave and strong spirit which filled this character up and touched us all. You will be so missed, and never forgotten. Condolences to her family and friends feeling the shadow of her passing, and who were so privileged to feel the light and love in her smile. Most of my acting role models have been women. And there are some people you only get to know through their work, and yet, somehow that's enough to make you fall in love with them. Helen McCrory was one such person for me. That I never got to see her perform live onstage is a personal tragedy. But for every performance of hers that I did experience, from her definitive Medea, to her fragile-yet-formidable Hester in The Deep Blue Sea, to the wickedest witch I've ever seen on TV (Evelyn Poole in Penny Dreadful) to name just a few, Helen McCrory continually held me in the palm of her hand with every single performance. She was spellbinding (and those cheekbones!). I respected the hell out of her. She was one of those actors that you watched and went "oh, that's how it's done." She was a muscular actor (that's the only way I know how to describe it), never failing to balance her natural ferocity and gravitas with a unique vulnerability and commitment to telling emotional truths, no matter how dark her characters. She was an idol and an inspiration, and everything I knew about her personal life and her character only made me love her more. That maybe she's getting to say hi to her friend and co-star Alan Rickman right now is a source of some comfort. I'm gonna miss her like hell. Rest in peace, dear lady.
