Do you need to add international phone service, or just rent a Wi-Fi when your get to Japan? Thanks

Ideally, use a SIM card or pocket WiFi. If you need to call somebody, use one of the free VoIP apps (Skype, Whatsapp, etc). Of course, the other party would also need to have installed the app.
