If from the US or elsewhere, these are the main options:
1) use free Wi-Fi in your accommodation (or some bars and restaurants) to make calls and send messages with WhatsApp or similar
2) buy a portable Wi-Fi service
3) buy a local SIM card (your phone will need to be unlocked first)
In any case, talk to your provider before your trip.
Ciao Dan - We have Verizon and Apple products (phone and ipad). We were able to get a travel plan with Verizon. You don't have to do anything to your phone when you get to Italy. You just need to make sure you are on some sort of plan so you can predict your charges. I would suggest asking your cell provider what their options are. If you don't do anything, your phone will work - it's just a matter of how much $ you are charged for your usage.
