Thinking of leasing a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid?

The U.S. News Best Price Program saves users an average of $1,824 off the MSRP, and a lower price equals lower monthly lease payments. That means you could see a savings of $90 a month on a 36-month lease.

Drive & Performance 6.5/10

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is all about comfort, and it rides smoothly over the harshest of road bumps. However, agility is not in its wheelhouse, and its regenerative braking system is a bit unrefined. All models come with front-wheel drive.

The Sonata Hybrid comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that combine for 192 horsepower. The electrical components help the Sonata Hybrid accelerate quickly from a standstill and provide plenty of oomph at highway speeds. Unfortunately, the six-speed automatic transmission delivers harsh shifts, and the transition between electric and gas power can be rough.

Fuel Economy 9.1/10

The 2023 Sonata Hybrid delivers its best fuel economy in the base Blue trim, with an EPA-estimated 50 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway. The other two trims get 45/51 mpg city/highway. Overall, the Sonata Hybrid's fuel economy is slightly above average for the hybrid car class.

Interior 7.8/10

The cabin in the 2023 Sonata Hybrid is full of high-quality materials, even in the standard trim, and most road noise is kept out. For an interior reminiscent of a luxury vehicle's, consider the top-tier Limited trim. This sedan has space for up to five passengers. The seats are comfortable, supportive and roomy, even for taller folks. The rear seats are less spacious, but they still have a generous amount of head- and legroom.

There is 16 cubic feet of cargo space in the Sonata Hybrid, and it's the same amount of room as in the nonhybrid Hyundai Sonata. You can fold down the rear seats for better cargo flexibility.

Value 8.4/10

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has an average value rating for the hybrid car class. We determine value based on the vehicle's estimated total cost of ownership and the vehicle's MSRP for its base and top trims.

Safety 9.3/10

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid received excellent crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Sonata Hybrid is also packed with a good number of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control with lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring.

For hauling children, there are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The upper tethers are easy to use, but the lower anchors are set too deep in the seats.

Quality and Reliability 81.0/100

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has a predicted reliability score of 81 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Critics’ Rating 9.0/10

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid receives a critics' rating that is good for the class. This rating, which is driven by our qualitative research, represents the overall tone and recommendation level that the automotive press places on a car.

Pricing

How Much Is a 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid?

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid starts at $28,100 in its base Blue trim. Its features include an 8-inch touch screen and lane-departure warning. The midlevel SEL trim starts at $31,450 and gains amenities such as heated front seats and a 10.25-inch touch screen. The range-topping Limited trim begins at $36,400 and adds niceties such as leather upholstery and a blind-spot camera.

Which Is the Best Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Model to Buy?

We suggest the SEL trim, as it still gets excellent fuel economy while adding useful comfort and technology features for a small price increase. Some notable features that the SEL gains on top of the Blue trim's features include an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated outside mirrors, navigation, Hyundai’s Dynamic Voice Recognition system, wireless device charging, Hyundai’s Digital Key and 17-inch alloy wheels.

U.S. News Expert Review

John Vincent is the Senior Editor and Correspondent/Vehicle Testing for U.S. News Best Cars. He aims to help car shoppers find the right vehicle at the right price.

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is one of the best midsize sedans you can buy. But, many shoppers overlook it in pursuit of the better-known Honda Accord Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid. I’ve spent time in the current-generation Sonata Hybrid and have come away impressed with its top-notch interior, reasonable starting price and comfortable ride. The Sonata Hybrid will see substantial updates to its look for the 2024 model year.

What We Like

While it doesn’t have Camry’s long-held reputation for quality, the Sonata Hybrid trounces its major rivals with industry-leading warranty coverage that includes powertrain coverage for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Its fuel economy is similar to the Camry Hybrid and far better than the Accord Hybrid. The best mileage comes with the base Sonata Hybrid Blue, which is well-equipped for the money. Its standard feature list includes a host of driver-assistance and safety technologies, plus creature comforts such as dual-zone automatic climate control and an 8-inch infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It’s available with some advanced safety features that aren’t broadly available in the marketplace, including a safe-exit alert and a blind-spot camera that displays a view of the adjacent lanes on the digital instrument cluster.

What We Don’t Like

Though the Sonata Hybrid does many things well, I think there is room for improvement in a few areas. To reduce weight and improve efficiency, Hyundai skimped on sound insulation and included low-rolling resistance tires. Both contribute to increased road noise.

How It Drove

The big trade-off for the Sonata Hybrid’s excellent fuel economy is a driving experience that’s pretty mundane. It offers less horsepower than the Accord Hybrid or Camry Hybrid and doesn’t handle as well as the Accord. Still, given its engine size, its performance is pretty good. Thankfully, Hyundai has opted to include a traditional six-speed automatic transmission instead of a buzzy continuously variable automatic (CVT). If you’re using the car for commuting or long freeway road trips, you’ll find the suspension setup comfortable. But if you’re looking for a sedan that can crisply carve corners, I don’t think the Sonata Hybrid is your car.

Is the 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid a Good Car?

Yes, the 2023 Sonata Hybrid is an outstanding hybrid car. It goes above and beyond what you expect from a green vehicle. It provides great fuel efficiency, and it excels in its comfort and feature offerings. The straightforward infotainment system also gets rave reviews. Step on the pedal, and the Sonata Hybrid gets moving without any fuss. However, its regenerative brakes are grabby, and the transitions between gas and electric power aren't very smooth. There’s also the nonhybrid Hyundai Sonata, which we review separately.

Hybrid shoppers should consider purchasing the Sonata Hybrid. Its multitude of features and average starting price make it a good value. In addition, the Hyundai boasts excellent fuel economy and a comfortable cabin. However, if you want more engagement, take a look at the Honda Accord Hybrid.

2022 vs. 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: What's the Difference?

For 2023, Hyundai makes some minor changes to the Sonata Hybrid’s available features list. The SEL trim gains a 10.25-inch touch screen, navigation and Hyundai’s Dynamic Voice Recognition system that previously was only available in the top Limited trim. Also, the Limited trim gets a standard panoramic sunroof, replacing the previously standard solar roof.

Here are the key changes for the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid over the last few years:

  • 2023: shuffled features
  • 2022: remote parking assist and Dynamic Voice Recognition became available
  • 2021: no major changes
  • 2020: fully redesigned with more standard tech and safety features, a larger infotainment touch screen, a bigger trunk and increased fuel economy; plug-in-hybrid model discontinued
  • 2019: no major changes
  • 2018: more standard and available features

2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Versus the Competition

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vs. Hyundai Sonata

The gas-only Hyundai Sonata has many things in common with its hybrid counterpart. Their positives include roomy and upscale cabins, user-friendly infotainment systems and composed handling. Both models are also less sporty than some of their competition. While the nonhybrid Sonata costs less than the hybrid version, the Sonata Hybrid has better fuel economy and quicker acceleration. The Sonata Hybrid is the more well-rounded vehicle.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vs. Honda Accord Hybrid

The Honda Accord Hybrid and Sonata Hybrid are great hybrid cars. Both of these vehicles provide ample features, easy-to-use infotainment technology and high-quality interior materials. However, it's the differences that may sway your decision. The Sonata Hybrid boasts higher fuel economy and more cushy seats than the Accord Hybrid, while the Honda offers a tad more horsepower, livelier handling and additional rear-seat legroom.
