The Mar Monte - Unbound Collection By Hyatt garners mixed reviews from guests. While the prime beachfront location and friendly staff are often lauded, many travelers are let down by the outdated and sometimes unclean rooms. Guests have called out the disappointing amenities, such as the underwhelming hot tub and valet service, and have expressed frustration with excessive noise levels and unexpected fees. Despite some praising the hotel's cleanliness and unique atmosphere, the overall sentiment suggests that the value proposition is not meeting expectations for all.

We booked our room two weeks prior to Labor Day not knowing that there was going to be the worst heat wave ever in the San Fernando Valley in history! Four days prior,
we also booked a room for my daughter's family. We have stayed at many Santa Barbara properties over the years for weekend getaways. We had a King corner ocean view room on the 3rd floor and my daughter's family had two queen beds on the 2nd floor with a pool and ocean view. Both rooms were great!
The hotel has a beautiful location between the Santa Ynez mountains and the ocean.
It is a quieter location than West Beach near the pier/wharf with all the shops and restaurants. A more relaxed vibe.
We enjoyed the beach in the late afternoon and the pool in the early evening.
The Tidal Wave restaurant offers a limited but tasty menu and the bartenders make
excellent cocktails. The outdoor pool area attendants practice thorough Covid protocol on all pool lounge chairs and tables. The majority of guests were wearing masks in the common areas and the front desk reps ask the guests to sign a paper stating they will follow the Covid-19 safe guidelines.
We had a lovely stay and will be back!
The Front desk reps are very professional, helpful and patient. Shout out to: Alice,
Sierra, Katherine and Kaitlyn. Their job is very stressful, especially duirng peak
holidays with 100% occupancy.

This hotel is GREAT! Book it and you will not be disappointed!
The most important hotel requirements for me right now are cleanliness and maintaining uninterrupted service while following proper sanitation protocols - Mar Monte did this perfectly. Everything was very clean and sanitized and the employees were as friendly and helpful as ever, making it feel safe, but still like a nice escape. The location is perfect! Beachside and an easy walk to many restaurants and attractions, but in a peaceful, less touristy, area of town. Book an ocean view room, it’s worth it to fall asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing and wake up to the beautiful blue Pacific. The pool is heated and located with a nice view of the beach. The dining option is great and does not sacrifice any experience or menu quality being slightly modified for the current restrictions. I ate the classic breakfast both mornings because the crispy breakfast potatoes were SO good. Booking a breakfast package rate is totally worth it, I was full until dinner! The coffee was also awesome, a very welcome surprise, as hotel coffee is usually blah. Parking is very easy and right on property. Self parking is currently the only option at a reasonable cost. The room is stylish and well appointed. I was surprised how big our room was and would be comfortable to stay many days. The hair dryer was the best part of the room - they have Drybar hair dryers! A long cord and a hair dryer that actually gets hot enough to dry your hair well is such a treat! This hotel would be great option for couples, families, a business trip, or a long term stay. You can easily relax in your comfortable, well appointed room and enjoy the pool and restaurant all trip, or use this as a comfortable home base while exploring all of SB. Thank you to the great team who took care of us during our stay! While I didn’t get their names, the bell person who checked us in and was so genuine and professional, and the smiling breakfast servers were wonderful to us! The attached photos are views from our room, the perfect place to watch the sunset!

KaraH1, Thank you for your recent stay and I am so thrilled to hear of your review. It really sounds like you were able to enjoy all the Mar Monte has to offer from our COVID-19 safety protocols in place to our dining options and local Spearhead coffee program down to our hairdryers in the room. We appreciate that you noticed the details that we put into this property to make us such a unique and local experience. Most importantly, I am eager to share your comments of praise with the staff. On behalf of the entire Mar Monte team, we already look forward to your return! Warmest Regards, Ingrid Braun

This is my family's second stay at the Mar Monte this summer, and both stays were lovely experiences. While we were a bit hesitant initially to venture out after staying at home during the pandemic, we made the decision to travel locally within California - and this hotel's cleanliness procedures really hit the mark to make us feel safe. The hotel has been recently renovated, and the beachy-bohemian touches give us the independent boutique hotel feel we prefer, with all the perks of being a Hyatt. The staff could not be more friendly! The food offerings by the pool were unexpectedly good, and we found ourselves having breakfast here daily (avocado toast) despite all the other amazing food options to choose from in SB. Between just our first and second visits, the menu has been doubled in size, and its obvious that many changes are being made here to give even more service. We can't wait to come back!

The Mar Monte Hotel is a beautiful oceanfront location that truly feels like the essence of Santa Barbara.
The thoughtful design and decor of this newly renovated hotel embraces the Spanish influence of the regions architecture. Our visit was during Covid and the front desk team still welcomed us with warmth and genuine hospitality. The food and beverage team operated from the open-air bar/pool area and efficiently delivered wonderful service while navigating the recent health protocol.
Guestrooms are spacious and weel appointed.
Overall the hotel and team get an A+ and I recommend the Mar Monte to anyone looking for a quiet Santa Barbara getaway.

Insider tip: a nice bottle of wine next to the outdoor firepit is a perfect way to start or finish an evening.

This is a good property, but if I had been paying full price and not on an award stay I don’t know that I would have stayed here, as it was not the exact location I would have preferred and rates seem a little high for what you’re getting, but perhaps there’s just a lot of pent up demand right now.

Pros
Across from the beach, which is awesome. Easy to walk to and along.
Tastefully decorated rooms. Our room was in a building across the street and it was quiet, which was appreciated. If you want to splurge you could get ocean front room, but I assume it’d be a little noisier with the road.
Housekeeping was very responsive to replacing coffee, towels, etc.
Coffee maker and mini fridge.
Parking available on street if you don’t want to pay for hotel parking. Never had a problem finding a spot.
Grocery within walking distance to pick up snacks, etc.

Cons
Beds are not the most comfortable so sleep quality diminished each night. The pillows were the mushiest things, I can’t even.
Had to make consecutive separate night award reservations and front desk staff confused everyday, key would deactivate so had to reexplain situation everyday and only 1 front desk person seemed to clearly understand. A small price to pay for using award nights, but a little annoying to deal with everyday. I’ve just never had such confusion with other hotels in the same situation. Always resolved though.
A bit far to comfortably walk to and from shops and resto areas, so you definitely need a car. If the beach is your only interest you’d probably be fine, but if you were looking for other conveniences, not the ideal location.
Room was on the smaller side of what was anticipated but adequate for a couple. Don’t expect a good view unless you get a waterfront view room.
Parking fee is high if you’re not willing to just park on the street.

Just had an awesome stay with family. Thank you Alice for all you did and making it a very enjoyable stay with an amazing, quiet room that had a great view overlooking the beach. She also helped with the internet speeds that I needed for zoom calls and more. Rest of the staff was also great and very accomodating.

The renovated rooms are much nicer than before, as we've stayed here often over the years as a Hyatt member and while the location was great (right next to zoo, lagoon and beach), the property used to be tired and outdated.

The patio/lobby was nice, it wasn't crowded and the pool was nicer and bigger than I remember. Only issue was that the pool area had very few COVID protocols in place or that were being observed. That was only area for improvement.

I had booked this hotel as our getaway for our one-year anniversary since we were unable to travel due to covid. We should've just stayed home.

I expected more out of a Hyatt collection hotel. If you're paying close to $500 a night, what are the few amenities you expect: at least a valet? at least a bellboy to help with luggage? clearly this was too much of an expectation as the hotel did not offer any of this. Their front desk rep had to help us with our luggage and we had to scavenger for a bell cart.

furthermore, upon check-in, we found out that the room we had reserved and paid more for (a room with a balcony) was not going to be honored by the hotel. they stated that on their end (since we had booked with expedia) they were not seeing any additional room information other than a standard king. The next day, they conveniently offered a resolution of either reducing our rate or upgrading our room "Since now they had more than 50% occupancy", which leads me to believe they mistakenly gave our room away and did not have the ability to honor our actual booking.

Overall, the room is extremely small, and there's really only space for one person in the bathroom, my husband and i took turns getting ready, and we are both average sized.

The location of the hotel is great, and you're mere steps away from the beach, and if management can get their act together and actually understand Hyatt standards, then this will be a great resort in the future.

Dear Lilithma, Please let me extend our apologies that we did not live up to expectations for your anniversary stay. We have added in services since your review and continue to do so as it makes sense with the times. As a historical property the rooms are not all the same size and we offer a various range of floor plans and views to our inventory. That being said we value your feedback and will take the appropriate measures to address the concerns or issues our guests have to prevent future occurrences. I hope you decide to give us a second chance down the line and if you should choose to do so, please reach out to me directly to coordinate. Warm Regards, Ingrid

Fun weekend at the "re-branded" property by Hyatt. Location can't be beat, you are as close as you can get to the beach. Felt very Covid clean and the room key on your phone makes checking in on your phone contactless. Room service food options weren't great and seem to be a work in progress. Bonus if you are traveling with kids there are 3 playgrounds within walking distance of hotel including one on the beach. Great walking/biking path along the beach to get into town. Plenty of street parking if you don't want to pay hotel rates. Will be staying here again.

My daughter got accepted to UCSB and we wanted to visit the area to celebrate. I used Hyatt reward nights for the stay. It seems your only choice in that instance is the old original building.

It’s strange that there is not a designated place to park to check in. Found a space at the end of the parking lot and walked back. The hotel was booked for the weekend and they cautioned us that there were not enough spaces for everyone to park.

Like most classic hotels, the rooms are smaller and the walls are thinner. We liked the classic architecture even at the expense of modern touches. To each his own. It was clean and I was impressed that housekeeping stopped daily (during COVID) to offer a freshen up and restock our water bottles. They were so polite and helpful.

The front desk did not explain how to get to our room on the 3rd floor. She just pointed out the elevator. We did figure out thanks to signage that we had to travel the length of the second floor to find another elevator.

We had a partial view of the pool and ocean. It was very nice. The mini fridge worked well. Automatic nightlights under the bed side tables were smart because it’s a bit of navigation at night between the bed and desk to get to the bathroom.

Best of all, we crossed the street each morning and enjoyed walks on East beach. We were about a mile from Funk Zone. The hotel has bikes you can borrow.

If I return, I will save my reward points for somewhere else. Stay in one of the newer buildings with a balcony.

We spent a week at the Mar Monte Hotel, Hyatt has recently renovated and rebranded this property. It is a family friendly as well as a couples get away, we had 2 kids. I took the Work from Hyatt package, which requires 7 nights minimum, which is perfect during Covid. You get 2 rooms, we requested for connected rooms, which Brendon Turner helped work it out for us for a small upgrade fees as we also got ocean front rooms. Brendon Turner was outstanding, he made this visit exceptional as he really went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Work from Hyatt is a great deal with 2 rooms, one room to stay with another room to work from. The rooms are fully upgraded with new TVs, Bathrooms and Room upgrades. Nothing beats the East Beach Sunrise and Sunset Views from this property. Excellent internet connectivity for Video Calls and a separate room really helps, our kids were able to take their classes too from here. Food is decent from Cafe Lido, we loved the Burgers from their All Day Menu, with special Golden (Happy) Hour 3-7pm, with Falafel Sliders. You can request for Microwave and with Covid, we opted for no room service (though they do offer if you'd like). Everyone wore Masks on the property at all times, including while delivering room service or dining. The rooms are double sanitized as we were told. Best part, they have Electric Chargers onsite (3 Tesla), and 1 for other Electric Cars, which was very convenient. Mar Monte also have complimentary Bikes, which was perfect to ride through the Coastal trails. With Santa Barbara Zoo located right behind the property, it was perfect with the kids. If it was not for Brendon Turner, not sure this trip would have been that memorable. Ask for Brendon, when you book, and try to connect to the hotel directly.

We were there over Labor Day weekend and the hotel is fine. Not the most updated property but clean. Honestly we were rarely in the room so it was no big deal. We had an oceanfront room on ground level and it was excellent location-wise. There was a wall around the patio area so private from the sidewalk. The hotel has a compact layout so everything was steps away. It’s far enough from State St so stays pretty quiet if that’s important.
