Europa League: British clubs in action

Jose Mourinho is looking for his second Europa League trophy
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to win any silverware as Manchester United manager

Mourinho (L) and Solskjaer (R) are the favourites for Europa League success this season

Brendan Rodgers and Leicester are in great form and will be highly confident
Mikel Arteta's chances of silverware come down to the Europa League this season

Brendan Rodgers (L) and Mikel Arteta (R) will be desperate for silverware this season

As mentioned above, there are a number of British teams in Europa League action over the next couple of weeks.

Manchester United, who dropped down from the Champions League, were perhaps given the most challenging of last-32 ties in Real Sociedad.

The Spaniards are currently in fifth place in La Liga and coming off the back of two successive league wins.

Due to covid restrictions, Thursday's tie will be played in Turin.

Elsewhere, Tottenham have been handed an easier tie on paper in Austrian side Wolfsberger, who are playing in their first-ever Europa League knockout stages.

Jose Mourinho's side have lost five of their last six games, however, though Thursday's match will be a chance to regain some form.

Arsenal are another side with a tricky opponent in Benfica, though they are not int he best of form down in fourth place in the Primeira Liga.

Elsewhere, Leicester take on Slavia Prague, while Steven Gerrad's in-form Rangers play Royal Antwerp.

Who has dropped down from the Champion League?

One of the big talking points at the conclusion of the Champions League groups stages is who will drop down to the Europa League.

Just looking at last year as an example, Inter Milan were perhaps the big name fall-out from the Champions League, and they ended up going all the way to the final, where they lost to Europa League serial winners Sevilla.

This year, there are yet more notable inclusions, none more so than Manchester United, who finished third to Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig in their Champions League group.

Elsewhere, Ajax finished third in their respective group for the second year running and now join the Europa League, while RB Salzburg are another tricky opponent dropping down.

Below is a full list of those who now enter the tournament:

  • Dynamo Kyiv
  • Club Brugge
  • Manchester United
  • RB Salzburg
  • FC Krasnodar
  • Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Ajax
  • Olympiacos
