AT&T Offers Complimentary Credit Monitoring to Customers Affected by 2021 Data Breach
Last month, it was reported that a 2021 data breach led to 71 million AT&T customers having their personal data stolen. When the report first came up, the carrier denied that its data was being sold on the dark web. But after a while, the carrier reset the passcodes of the customers who were part of the breach.
On its website, AT&T admitted that a total of 73 million customers were affected by the breach. This included 65.4 million previous subscribers and 7.6 million current customers.
BleepingComputer recently reported that the carrier has sent out a letter to victims of the data breach. The letter reads:
"At AT&T, we take the security of your data very seriously. We’re writing to inform you that AT&T has determined that some of your personal information was compromised...What happened? On March 26, 2024, we determined that AT&T customer information was included in a dataset released on the dark web on March 17, 2024."
The letter also informs affected customers that AT&T will be offering them a year of “credit monitoring, identity theft detection and resolution services provided by Experian’s IdentityWorks.” They have also shared details on how victims can take advantage of the complimentary credit monitoring. Each letter also includes an activation code for affected customers.
According to the report, AT&T has sent out the letter to 51 million former and current subscribers.
