Hot honey pizza

We make pizza at home using our homemade pizza dough or this easy Bisquick pizza crust quite often. Usually we load it up with traditional toppings, but once in a while we like to mix it up by adding things like hot honey. If you haven’t tried this magical ingredient, it’s time you give it a shot.

The best thing about hot honey pizza, besides the spicy, sweet kick you get from the drizzle of honey, is that you can load it up with whatever favorite toppings you want. If you’re making pizza for a crowd, everyone can choose their own combo.

What is Hot Honey?

hot honey in a bowl

Hot honey is a type of infused honey that combines the sweetness of honey with the heat of chili peppers. It’s a versatile condiment that can be used in a wide variety of dishes, and it has gained significant popularity in recent years for several reasons.

Hot honey offers a unique balance of sweetness and heat that enhances many types of dishes. This combination of flavors isn’t common in most condiments, which makes hot honey an exciting option for people looking to try something new.

Hot honey can be used in an incredibly wide range of dishes. It can be drizzled over pizza, added to barbecue sauce, used as a glaze for roasted vegetables or meats, mixed into cocktails, or even used as a topping for ice cream or other desserts. This versatility makes it a valuable addition to any kitchen.

In recent years, there’s been a trend toward more complex and unexpected flavor combinations in food. Hot honey fits perfectly into this trend, offering a blend of sweet, spicy, and slightly savory flavors.

Ingredients You Need

  • Pizza dough – You can make your own (here’s our recipe for a great easy pizza crust) or you can use any store-bought dough you like. We use Trader Joes and Von’s pizza dough all the time.
  • Pizza sauce – You can also make your own pizza sauce or use any store-bought brand you like.
  • Mozzarella cheese – It’s best to use shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese.
  • Hot Honey – You can find hot honey from many different brands. Try a few and see which you like best. I really like Mike’s Hot Honey, which you can get on Amazon. But Signature Select brand from Von’s is almost as good. It doesn’t have to be an expensive brand.
  • Toppings of your choice – You can use whatever toppings you like. For some ideas, see below.

Our toppings often end up being:

  • Pepperoni
  • Salami
  • Onions
  • Green peppers
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Artichokes
  • etc….

Anything goes, really.

Suggested Equipment

  • Pizza Pan: I’m a big fan of the Cuisinart Pizza Pan. It has holes in the pan so your crust gets perfectly crispy without overdoing it. You never have to worry about half-baked dough with this pizza pan.
  • Pizza Peel: A pizza peel is your best friend for sliding your pizza in and out of the oven. If you don’t have one, no sweat, just flip a sheet pan upside down and use that. To get your pizza out of the oven without a peel, get creative with tongs (be gentle!) or two spatulas.
  • Pizza Cutter: Your pie deserves a good, sharp pizza cutter to slice through all those toppings. I’ve seen some pretty funky pizza cutter designs, but you can’t go wrong with Oxo Good Grips 4″ pizza cutter.
  • Honey Wand: Drizzling honey on your pizza is a game-changer, and a honey wand makes it easy (and less messy!). Keep it horizontal and spin it around to keep the honey nice and neat, then hold it vertical to let the honey drip down in a perfect ribbon.

How to Make Hot Honey Pizza

Preheat the oven to 400° F. Place a rack in the center of the oven.

Start by making up your homemade pizza dough. You can see how on our pizza dough recipe. You can also just buy pre-made pizza dough. We like the ones we get at Trader Joes or Safeway/Vons/Albertsons.

pizza dough ready to roll out

Once you’ve rolled out the pizza dough, you’ll want to place it on your preferred cooking sheet. This could be a pizza stone or pizza pan. My favorite to use is this Cuisinart pizza pan with air vents in the bottom. It gets the crust nice and crunchy.

Spread on the pizza sauce, then add your favorite toppings and a generous sprinkling of Mozzarella cheese.

Hot honey pizza ready to cook

Put the pizza in the oven on the middle rack and cook for about 12 minutes or until the cheese is nice and bubbly on the top.

Remove it from the oven. Let it cool for a minute. Then drizzle on the hot honey. Yep, that’s all there is to it. Super simple. Oh so good.

Tips and Notes

  • You can use pre-made, store bought pizza dough to save time.
  • Cook the pizza in oven, in your home pizza oven, or even on the grill. I love cooking pizza outdoors on the grill. It gets a little bit of smoky flavor along with a super crispy crust.
  • Hot honey can be drizzled on any type of pizza or flatbread, so get creative and try some things!

Reheating Pizza

We’ve finally found the ultimate way to reheat pizza and that’s in the air fryer! Stop trying to revive day-old pizza in the microwave and learn how to reheat pizza in the air fryer.

If you don’t want to use the air fryer, or don’t have one, reheat your pizza on 350° F in the oven for about 8 minutes.
