Angela Bassett reveals that her 12-year-old twins, Bronwyn and Slater, having been dealing with racism since they were in preschool.

“Even from the age of 4, from preschool, they’ve had to deal with — and as crazy as it seems or sounds — color issues,” the “Black Panther” actress told People in an interview released Wednesday. “Or because they were African-Americans, and whether other kids will play with them or have issue with that.”

The 59-year-old added, “It makes you gasp and it just squeezes your heart sometimes, because you never want your kids to go through these sort of pain issues or you thought it’d be much later, once they get a firm footing of who they are.”

Bassett also said racism couldn’t come from “young minds” and had to have been heard somewhere else.

The “9-1-1” actress and husband Courtney B. Vance welcomed the twins via surrogate in 2006.
